Hi I’m Sara Thorn, designer/artist, curator, seer based in Melbourne, Australia. The Galaxy Now project brings to life my work in fashion from 1983-1994 in collaboration with Bruce Slorach. The labels Abyss Studio, Galaxy emporium, Funkessentials were synonymous with fashion as culture, textile, print, pattern as a form of communication . Galaxy Now looks at what is the legacy of this work now. How can it have a conversation with the present?

Exhibition And Film
The exhibition/pop up Galaxy Now at Fort Delta Gallery and the film Galaxy Now explore the energy of print,colour communication through the original graphics and clothing.ibition will be partly pop up shop selling original archival clothing and accessories from 1984 -1993 offered for the first time in over 20 years,and
showcase original photographs, art work and ephemera juxtaposed to recent photos and film shot through the eyes of a new generation of contemporary artists, new music & preview of my recent fashion pieces created in the inspiration of how I used to work under the Sara Thorn Project.
Samples of some of the pieces spanning men's, women's and children pieces will be for sale.
The extensive Abyss/Galaxy archives will include samples, pre loved and collectibles, they are coming out of storage and want new homes! Most have never been worn; some pieces worse for wear & tear. I thought it important to honor this work and sell it in an exhibition/salon atmosphere.

Film
The film Galaxy Now, a collaboration between myself and Sally Tabart sets about capturing the spirit of Melbourne in the early 80’s where fashion, art & escaping into club land was a way of life ,how has this changed? See the teaser for a preview of film. Part original footage with new experimental film, interviews by punters, academics and personalities , the film like the exhibition will fuse the present with the past capturing creativity, pattern and interactions with the clothing and energy .The Soundtrack will feature the music of Oscar Key Sung and the "All I Could Do" Black Vanilla Remix and footage by Willow Darling.The film will run throughout the exhibition.

A little bit of History
I’m looking back at my work in context of when and where it was created, I feel this time in Melbourne's post punk creative history in the early eighties has had little representation, where originality was number one . The isolation of Melbourne at that time encouraged originality where disciplines intermixed; collaborations abounded we were part of a literal creative explosion in Melbourne . We were creating subcultures within sub cultures to escape a bland mainstream.

I hope my exhibition will expose to a new generation a legacy of that time as inspiration and make a contribution to documenting and exposing this important time and the characters that played in it and what has followed on…..

Fast forward to 2013 and quite by chance my 23 year old son and his friends all artists,musicians just like myself at that age in Melbourne came upon some of the pieces and started wearing them-their way.....
which inspired a new photo shoot where they played with and interpreted the clothing again with a new energy .....
For me this synergy between the energies is irresistible , looking at time as non linear and clothing as a way to express personal, subversive, popular and unpopular ideas through print, graphics and stories.
As synchronicity would have it around the same time in 2013 I was invited to Bali to create a collection inspired by my old work, where I looked at old prints and the spirit they were created in and had my conversation with this work. Produced under the Sara Thorn Project some of these pieces will be part of the exhibition looking at print, motifs as language beyond time and words.
It feels like the right time to bring together all these elements into one project and share them....

The Challenges
The challenges of this project are to bring all the diverse elements together,and get enough support and exposure to make it an incredible event which does bring out the people from the past and a new interested generation.
The project requires a lot of my time and management skills to oversee a seamless ,exciting presentation.
The risks are not getting enough support financially to pay for event,exhibition,film.
