Noir Revue started in 2010 at 10pm with Sydney Fringe applications due at midnight. An idea of a cabaret show where you didn't have to 'leave your troubles at the door' promptly formed. Instead, you would bring your troubles in with you and then drown your sorrows with gin, whiskey or whatever your choice of poison is. A group of cabaret misfits would share their troubles too. Some blues, some jazz and maybe some nudity. I made that midnight deadline and then got on with life, not giving it a second thought. When the offer came in to take part in the Fringe, I was excited, but realised, 'oh dear, I'd better get that idea made into a show'.

At the time I had a clear visual image of what I wanted the show to look like, but not much else. It didn't take long to produce a song list, mood board and a short list of performers that I love working with. The show took shape, a homage to Film Noir set in a cabaret with live music. A lot of the original ideas are still there but the show has grown and matured in some wonderful ways and an Australian tour will allow the production to continue to grow into a tighter, more dynamic show.

Noir Revue. The musical cabaret burlesque murder mystery.

Darker than shadows and steamier than a warm lamplit street after the rain, Noir Revue takes you back to a time when men were men and femmes were fatale. Step back into the age of jazz and Film Noir for a night of heartbreak, loneliness, anger and sadness from tragic beauties, sinister fellows and dames you wouldn’t want to mess with. These dark, bluesy performers of dance and song will entertain and seduce you, then hit you with their killer cabaret. Join them for an evening of noir, nostalgia and maybe even some nudity. Noir Revue is a Film Noir-inspired, blues-soaked cabaret with live band, narrated by an unseen detective. Featuring aerials (tissu and trapeze), cabaret, burlesque, torch singer, blues crooner and film, Noir Revue has toured the Sydney Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival, and sold out the Spiegeltent in the Old Parliament House rose gardens for Canberra’s Centenary.

The Cast:

Sarina del Fuego - The Smokin’ Widowmaker.   “One half of the del Fuego sisters’ doppelganger double-act.”

Noir Revue’s creator is an internationally seasoned performer and producer with over ten years in the burlesque business. Sarina’s sophisticated and lavish performances are always replete with feathers, diamantes, glitz and glamour. She has brought Noir Revue to venues across Australia, including the Sydney Fringe Festival, Adelaide Fringe and The Famous Spiegeltent for Canberra’s Enlighten Festival. HerCanberra named Sarina one of the capital’s Most Fascinating Women of 2013.

Lola LaBelle - The Ghost Orchid.  “She tells me I’m morbid.”

Direct from L.A., brunette bombshell Lola LaBelle joins the Australian cast of Noir Revue. As a performer, Lola has headlined burlesque shows around the world. As a producer, her passion for creating unforgettably entertaining experiences has helped garner a succession of five-star reviews and awards. To some, burlesque is a spectacular strip tease with performers adorned in thousands of glittering jewels; to others it’s a political statement on what being a woman means today. For international burlesque artist Lola LaBelle, it’s both.

Michael Wheatley – The Racketeering Crooner.  “He likes to drink. And he likes to sing.”

Noir Revue’s musical director has been a mainstay in Sydney’s music scene for over twenty years. As a musician, singer, producer and DJ, Michael has captivated audiences in venues such as The Basement, Opera Bar and The Vanguard, and various festivals including Sydney Fringe Festival, Jurassic Lounge, and Playground Weekender. As well as performing with Noir Revue since 2010, Michael wrote the show’s original music, and recorded and produced its soundtrack CD.

Jordan Morris – The Detective Noirrator.  “I hate cases with twins.”

By day, Noir Revue’s hardboiled scriptwriter is a teacher and librarian. He won the 2005 A.C.T. Writers Centre Young & Emerging Writer Mentorship, and was a quarterfinalist in the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Competition. Jordan has been published in pulp magazines and anthologies, and in a previous life he ran a boutique hotel for writers and artists. His first novel, Round and Round, was published in 2013.

Rose Grayson – The Torch Singer.  “Ain’t nothing sexier than a dame on a piano.”

Rose Grayson is the classic chanteuse par excellence. Rose’s exquisite vocal style, charismatic stage presence and stunning range of vintage haute couture has captivated audiences as diverse as the Art Gallery of NSW, Splendour in the Grass, the Opera Point Marquee, Ivy, Low Bar and Felix. When Rose sings, the world is transported to another time and place.

Paloma Negra – The Flying Trap.  “She keeps herself above the crowd, metaphorically and literally.”

As a baby. Paloma Negra literally slept in an open guitar case on stage as her parents toured the world. Since then, she has followed in her parents’ flamenco footsteps, evolving into a renowned dancer, choreographer and aerialist in her own right. Since earning her Bachelor of Performing Arts in Dance, ballet, contemporary dance and Ninjitsu are just a few of the moment styles that Paloma has studied and which influence her performances. Anything Goes, the 2013 Australian Burlesque Festival and The Big Tease are just a few of Paloma’s recent shows. Paloma Negra has become particularly known for fluid unique style and intricate detail on the trapeze.

Missy – The Fire Extinguisher.  “Short, sweet and alcoholic.”

With a performance style that bridges the burlesque, cabaret and circus worlds, Missy is a renowned pole performer, aerialist, dancer and showgirl. Having established a reputation for combining her love of dance with her character-driven choreography and unique costuming, Missy has showcased her style both locally and internationally. In conjunction with her pole and aerial work, Missy is a versatile performer with experience in various styles of dance from showgirl burlesque to contemporary dance; from Broadway-style jazz to podium and cage dancing; and from ballet to roller-skating. Missy is currently a resident performer at Sydney’s Slide Lounge- a venue specialising in cabaret and circus entertainment and the home of El’ Circo.

Kelly Ann Doll – The Dancing Doll.  “Behind every bad man’s an even worse woman twisting the knife.”

Kelly Ann Doll has been captivating Australian and international audiences with her sassy, saucy, high octane brand of burlesque for nearly a decade. this talented ‘pint sized pocket rocket’ leaves her audience breathless, exhilarated and wanting more and was recently awarded the prestigious RAW Australia Performing Artist of the Year 2013 along with the RAW Sydney Performing Artist of the Year 2013. Renowned for her signature style of performance art incorporating swing dancing, circus and a high energy tease.

The ShanTones – The Rhythm Section.  “Nobody’s pulling a fast one.”

Noir Revue’s vocalists and pianist are backed by the smooth Shannon Haritos on double bass and snappy Shane “Steel” O’Neill on drums and Daniel Holmes on guitar.

Liz Lea – The Choreographer Fatale.

Performer and choreographer Liz Lea trained at London Contemporary Dance School and Akademi in London, and Darpana Academy in India. Based between Australia and the UK for many years, she now works from as Artistic Director of Canberra Dance Theatre and Associate Director at QL2 Centre for Youth Dance. How The Funds Will Be Used

I've been producing for just under 10 years and so far have happily self-funded all of my productions. Now I have bitten off a great deal, venturing out with 2 shows and a cast of 10, a 6 date tour over 2 weeks.

OUR BUDGET:
$1300 for the tour bus
$1640 petrol
$3000 for accommodation
$7000 venue hire
$15000 cast wages

This is the bulk of our budget - we haven't listed costuming, advertising, printing, design, distribution of flyers and posters, aerial rigging, piano hire and any other incidentals.  Of course this will also add up. We're not looking for a huge amount, just enough to help pay for our accommodation or the bus hire and petrol.

Please, if you have ever enjoyed any of my productions or are looking forward to seeing the fabulous cast on this tour, then dig deep or shallow, every little bit helps. Of course, it would be wonderful if we could all enjoy a glass of bubbles after a show and not be worried about financing everything.

The Challenges

Challenges for this tour include getting everything done within the weeks we have left. I have a great cast and they are all fabulous at pitching in. I have one of the aerialists, Missy, sourcing riggers and booking them in. Michael Wheatley the Musical Director is finding solutions to piano hire in venues that don't have a piano. Also, he has been great in organising all the band rehearsals and the recording of our Noir Revue soundtrack, which we hope to get completed to sell on the road.

We are trying to keep costs as low as possible and will be travelling back to Sydney after each show, so a big obstacle is time-restrictions in terms of getting to the venue in time for sound and lighting techs. We all plan to share the driving. I really do have the dream team.
