The award winning show Songs for the Fallen is returning for a one night only Nightclub Edition, a masquerade ball fundraiser at the Oxford Art Factory this July. All proceeds go to getting this little-show-that-could to the New York Music Theatre Festival, a showcase event that's a chance for small independent theatre to vie for the big time.

Events are running in Sydney and Melbourne, see the rewards for tickets and a damn good time!

"Songs for the Fallen is one of those excellent finds that gives you faith in human ingenuity….The result is a hilarious, self-aware piece of sophisticated debauchery. She and her gang of bohemians have produced a triumph of indie theatre."– Jessica Keith // Concrete Playground

THE BEGINNING:

Since her days at drama school, actor, comedienne and raconteur Sheridan Harbridge dreamt of creating a theatre show that delved into the world of Marie Duplessis, the infamous 19th Century demi-monde whose life inspired such iconic works as The Lady of the Camellia’s, La Traviata, and Baz Lurhman's Moulin Rouge!

She dreamt of an immersive work that would seduce the audience into Marie’s boudoir in Paris; that crossed genres of musical, cabaret, pop and burlesque, to create a real body experience of the notoriously decadent life of the world’s first celebrity Party Girl. The work was to not only capture her electric heights, but retrace her extraordinary and moving story from desperate poverty to her place as the most revered, the most imitated, and the most talked about woman in Europe, to ultimately her tragic death at the age of 23.

La Traviata ~ {Italian}
trans// the fallen woman; the woman who strayed.

THE TEAM:

In late 2011 writer / performer, Sheridan Harbridge, director, Shane Anthony, AFI Award and APRA Screen Music Award nominee composer, Basil Hogios, and actors Ben Gerrard and Garth Holcombe started to collaborate on the project and the the first draft of Songs for the Fallen was born. In December 2012 with support from Bundanon Trust Estate, NIDA, Tamarama Rock Surfers, Michael Sieders Presents and Critical Stages the show premiered in Sydney to a sold out season. Set design by Michael Hankin and Costume design by Lisa Mimmocchi.

IT WENT A BIT LIKE THIS:

Paris 1847. The extraordinary life of Marie Duplessis – courtesan, party girl, liar and legend - from desperate poverty to meteoric rise as the most notorious woman in France. Part vaudeville, part cabaret, part MTV-goes-Baroque, it was the wild and hilarious tale of a woman who knew one thing: good girls don’t make history.

The unbelievable tale that inspired The Lady of the Camellias, La Traviata and Moulin Rouge! Songs for the Fallen is an invitation to the decadent final party of the real-life woman who defied her fate, and captured a nation.

PEOPLE SAID NICE THINGS. LIKE THIS:

"…Songs for the Fallen neatly treads a bittersweet tightrope… Taking a cue from the life of its protagonist, Songs For the Fallen is wonderfully rip-roaring, outrageous and fun, but it is the tinge of tragedy that really makes it sing." Jonathan Hindmarsh // The Brag

"Songs For The Fallen doesn’t fall very far short of a tour de farce." Lloyd Bradford Syke // Crikey

"Sheridan Harbridge’s hilarious Songs for the Fallen…It’s a show where cabaret meets theatre and the language of pop music meets French." Time Out // Ben Neutze ****

"…Throw caution to the wind, embrace the bling, kick up those heels and party like it’s 1847. Songs for the Fallen dares you to dispense of any inhibitions you might have and join Sheridan Harbridge and the boys for a damned good time." Revelly Robinson // Artshub Rating: 4 stars out of 5

We played to critical acclaim and packed houses for a second season in Sydney in early 2013 and soon after toured to the Brisbane International Festival. In late 2015 the company will tour again to the Victorian Arts Centre and tour centres in NSW.

                            NOW SONGS FOR THE FALLEN HAS BEEN INVITED TO THE
                                  2015 NEW YORK MUSIC THEATRE FESTIVAL {NYMF}

NYMF is the world’s premier music theatre festival, it’s a showcase platform of new music theatre works selected from all over the globe to present to producers and professionals for Broadway and Off-Broadway seasons. The Festival has a great history of success stories from their presentations, the Pulitzer Prize winning Next to Normal, Title of Show, and Shout! to name a few, all presented at NYMF and went on to massive global success.

The New York Musical Theatre Festival nurtures the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals to ensure the future vitality of musical theatre. Check out New York Music Theatre Festival

It is a total coup that we have been invited, and an incredible opportunity to take a show that began on the Sydney independent theatre scene to the international stage.

         Songs for the Fallen: Made out of sweat, love, blood, hairspray, tears and glitter!

How The Funds Will Be Used

The Songs for the Fallen company is seeking to raise funds to help get us to NYC in July and to showcase the best show possible at NYMF. It's an enormous undertaking to tour independent theatre half way across the world and so far we have secured some funding from very generous donors and sponsors, but without raising extra funds this opportunity won't be possible.

We've budgeted that the entire cost to showcase in July will $64, 970, {to be exact}. We've already raised $24, 050  and we're hoping to raise $16, 500 through this campaign and we'd love to you to spread the word.

Seeing Songs for the Fallen profile at NYMF will promote the work of Australian artists to future producers and investors overseas. The festival will showcase 5 performances of Songs for the Fallen and provide access to valuable networking opportunities to forge relationships with producers from international markets.

Funds raised will contribute towards flights for artists, visas, production costs to tour our set and costumes, venue hire for rehearsal in NYC and marketing and advertising costs to get the right people to see our work.

                            We'd love you to join us on this journey!

The Challenges

We are committed to showcasing the best of new Australian music theatre in New York. This campaign forms a significant competent of our remaining fundraising. The current gap in funds required to get our company to NYC and to get the show on is the biggest challenge remaining. We've been invited to the festival and our team is ready to go!

Working as independent theatre makers and producers has many limitations, but we would like to thank and acknowledge the support of everyone who has helped us create and tour this work in Australia.

We'd love any support you can offer to help us overcome these challenges!

A little love.

Thank you for your support!
