Room's unique strength as a piece of theatre lies in its experimental creative process: the interaction between the performers physicality and uncongenial light and sound sources. This process has created a thrilling piece of live theatre that invokes that spine tingling feeling of a great horror movie and displays a quirky, brooding and deep intelligence.

PROJECT HISTORY:
Room began in 2011 and has had three major developments since then. It began as an experimental collaboration with Freshly Squeezed where our core ideas and artistic relationships where forged. In 2012, we cemented their working relationships and spent a month working with dramaturg Paschal Berry through the support of PACT and the Vacant Room Project to bring it to full production length and expand upon ideas. This coming May, the work will have one last development phase at Blacktown Arts Centre where ideas will be refined, detailed and made ready to showcased as part of PACT centre for emerging artists' PLATFORM. During this debut season the collateral collected from the season will be put towards continuing to build relationships with funding bodies, presenters and industry peers. We are excited to finish the work and prepare it for local and touring seasons. This campaign will ensure that we keep moving towards these goals.
MORE ABOUT ROOM:
Blurring the lines between reality and delusion, Room plunges into a dark, cyclical world of history and memory. A woman awakes alone in a dark house. The TV flickers on at random, hanging lights swing erratically, and the walls are falling apart. We don't know how she arrived, or why she is there. What is this sinister presence in the space? A figure of her imagination? A fractured memory from her past?
Room is a thrilling and poetic piece of live theatre crafted around the observer's experience. Audiences are absorbed into a rich, sensory environment shaped by the synergy of light, sound and performance.

How The Funds Will Be Used
$1500 towards Artist & Crew Fees: As we expand the piece into full-length work, we will bring professional designers and advisors on board who can help us ensure that we achieve a work that is complete and dramaturgically sound.
$1000 towards Venue Hire: This project's strength comes directly from how light and sound behave and shape an environment. We need to present the work in a a space that allows us to precisely control all elements of the performance space. The space at PACT is ideal for this and has in fact been the home of two of the work's developments. How perfect that we present our full-length performance in this space? But it comes at a cost.
$500 for Technical Equipment: To successfully craft the audience's experience of this immersive piece, we need hire or purchase the right equipment that allows us to precisely control all elements of the performance space.
$500 for Costumes & Props: Room has a realistic domestic setting, so many props need to be purchased in order to maintain the integrity of the performance.

The Challenges
1. A performance space that can provide complete darkness.
Having complete darkness is an element that cannot be compromised. We need a venue that will allow us to achieve total control over light and darkness alike. All of our developments to date have allowed us to spend long hours in dark, quiet spaces, examining and perfecting the interplay between body, sound and light.
2. Our guest artist / lighting designer to stay on board.
Lighting designer Chris Page is a vital collaborator on the project and has been on board since the Vacant Room development at PACT in 2012, when a huge body of the work took shape. It's his work, as much as ours, and we need him to see it through to the end.
3. Our dramaturg to stay on board.
Paschal Berry, Sydney dramaturg and writer has been on board with the project since 2012, and have since adopted him as our mentor. He knows the work inside and out, and has been helping us create solid dramatic structure and context for our image and sound based performance compositions.
All of these come at a large financial commitment. This campaign will bring us the final step towards presenting a fully realised new performance piece by providing the financial ability to hire the space, purchase consumable items and pay the artists a fee for their time and skills. With this final challenge overcome there is no doubt of Room being a thrilling piece of theatre to watch come May.
