The Simon Wright Band Debut Release

Between winning some studio time in a battle of the bands and the help of close friends and family, we have managed to track and film a live session at Collingwood's "Studio 52". We are so happy with the result we have decided to release it as our debut EP.
The studio time excited us most. We weren't exactly rolling in cash at the time but we needed to get something down. We figured one day would not be enough time to track an EP so decided to take a different approach, the intention was to film and record a five song set, live. We wanted to a capture a nice sounding performance for youtube, something we could use to get the name out there to bookers and promoters, a kind of video demo. We went into Studio 52 on the 14th of May 2012 and brought with us special guest Mikey Chan on guitar and a film crew. At the end of the day we were so happy with what we had accomplished that we decided to release it as a stand alone EP. At present the release date is planned for September, but there is still work to be done to get the recording to the level we would like. The mixing, mastering and manufacturing of this EP to the quality that we need is quite expensive. This is where you come in. We'd like to offer you pre-sale copies of the EP, mailed directly to your door upon completion, like, before the release date, as in, you'll get it first, so like, before anyone else. I know pretty cool huh? And you get that for a donation of just $15, bloody bargain. There is also a bunch of other incentives there for those of you feeling particularly generous, including tickets to the launch show and even a private performance in your own living room. And if we don't make the $2000 goal...... you'll get your money back....... we'll still finish the EP...... It just might take us a little longer.
The Simon Wright band officially started in 2011 however the three of us that make up the core band have been playing with each other for quite some time. We are all from Byron Bay, a laid back seaside surf community on the north coast of NSW often known for it's annual Blues and Roots Festival. Shane (Drums) and I grew up together from a young age and even played in a band together when we were teens named "The Wright Brothers". Nicko (bass) was getting about at the same time in another local act named "Marshall and The Fro". We all moved to Melbourne separately over a period of about a year. All with the same dream in mind - Music. Still, it was another 3 or 4 years before we began playing together as a group. Before that I was fronting the Eclective an eight piece funk outfit, Shane was rocking out with Progressive metal group "Engine Three Seven" and Nicko was grooving with punk/reggae rockers "El Moth and the Turbo Rads". Funnily enough, the first official gig under the name "The Simon Wright Band" was the final of the Whotune/Casio "Take The Stage" competition. I had entered the competition months earlier with a song I had written with my brother Jed Wright named "Lift Me Up" [Video below] and forgotten about it until I was contacted by email to congratulate me on making the final. As you can imagine I was blown away. So excited! The only problem was when I entered the competition I had a band, since which, had become a thing of the past. The final performance was over the internet, via web cam, to judges across the world. I didn't really have time to prepare so I called my mate Shaneo and said "I need drums!" my mate Nicko and said "I need bass!" and seeing as though the comp is sponsored by CASIO Keyboards I'd better get some keys "Luke Saunders, will you play keys for me?". It was last minute and it was by our own standards far from our best. Still, the judges seemed to like it and we took out first place!! I won a piano that day amongst other things, possibly the coolest thing I've ever won.

So Here Is The Story

The total prize package included a band consultation with Little Indian, a drummers package from Drumtek and a day in Studio B at Collingwood's "Studio 52".

Between us, we've pretty much done it all from country to hip hop, reggae to rock'n'roll and everything in between. Our set mixes a lot of genres together and it is hard to pigeon hole, then again, everyone says that about their own music. Lately I've been referring to it as "Blues inspired Urban Soul". The songwriting takes elements from reggae, funk, soul, rhythm and blues, hip hop, rock n roll and jazz. We like to keep it high energy, if you're not sweating, then we're not doing it right.
