Brethrens Keep is a 15 minute short fiction film that deals with issues of family violence, institutionalized violence, indoctrination and cyclic abuse.
Brethrens Keep Teaser from Jake Zappia on Vimeo.

Brethrens Keep is the story of Caleb, a young boy born into St Mary’s Exclusive Brethren Community, raised by his single mother Joanna, alongside his sister Delilah. The family are presided over by the Church as members of the Brethren. Caleb is a child of abuse, and lives in constant fear of his mother, his surroundings, and his tomorrows. Yet through all of this, he is a child of good nature, good intentions and above all, a belief that everything happens for a reason; that his mother is only doing what she is doing in his best interest.

Upon accidentally embarrassing and endangering his mother’s job, he is left to walk home from Church on his own. Seeking shelter from the streets, he enters a large drain to find a sick and injured puppy. Despite knowing the risk of excommunication involved with having any pets, he takes the puppy home to nurse it back to health.

We will be shooting Brethrens Keep at the end of April 2015 with the aim of finishing the film by August 2015 with the launch of the #openthedoor campaign, which will look to encourage meaningful dialoge about domestic and family abuse issues in the mainstream
.
We are counting on you to play an integral role in opening the doors on these issues by using this platform to become a part of our team.

We are also looking for people who feel they personally connect with these issues to be actively involved in our filmmaking process.

We are directly contactable at [email protected]

How The Funds Will Be Used

The funds we raise here will go towards equipment hire and production design.

Our Black Magic camera will give us a big screen feel. It will allow us to capture the emotion of the environment and draw the audience into Caleb's world. In order to create an authentic world we need real locations and a huge amount of production design ranging from dressing a disheveled house* to a congregation* of followers. Also we need to be able to feed our dedicated and talent cast and crew.
