Please note: you may notice that the production design and camera work in the video above are of an insanely low standard. When the short film is made, there will be proper, professional people in charge of these things.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

We are making 'Mummy's Boy', a short horror-romance-comedy (hor-rom-com rolls off the tongue, I think) about the downside of unconditional love.
So far, we have a wonderful team (and a storyboard done by me, snippets of which are included).
Shooting will be in the next few months, and we will have a finished product by the end of the year!
In the meantime, there's a lot of work to do.

About me (Sofija Stefanovic - writer and director)
My writing projects have included co-writing 'John Safran's Race Relations' and 'Myf Warhurst's Nice', both for the ABC.
I'm very excited to be debuting as a director. Lucky for me, the rest of the team is very experienced, so I'm hoping this means I'll be able to stand on their shoulders and make something good.
I've always been a writer, but when I wrote this short, I couldn't stop imagining each scene in great detail. When pushed by producer John Molloy ('There's no women directing hor-rom-coms! Or men, actually! It's weird! I think people will like it! Or hate it! Anyway, stop being a chicken and do it.') I agreed. That doesn't mean I'm not very nervous. Lucky for me, I have a team.

Funding
Despite cutting heaps off the budget through the generosity of above-mentioned team, there are some things you always have to pay for.
Such as equipment.
And in this case, some other stuff. The gruesome nature of the film (which will, by the way, also be funny) means that I will need some serious horror tools. I mean prosthetic heads for smashing, stunt people to be spun around by the ankles, insurance for actors and so on.
Unfortunately for me, there's no funding for short films (except post-production). This is where you, kind supporters, come in.

Synopsis
Vic is a man looking for love. Unfortunately, his (dead) overbearing mother keeps coming back to life to ruin everything. So he keeps killing her.

The film draws inspiration from DH Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, and explores the notion of unconditional love. Unconditional love is suffocating. And because it's unconditional, no matter what you do, you can't shake it.
So Vic's mother dies, but comes back to haunt and follow him around, clinging and kissing him until he can take no more.
So he goes about killing her.
Over and over again.

Then, he falls in love.

And everything seems to fall into place.
Not for long.

The film is gruesome, funny and shocking. It makes us think about neediness, child-parent relationships and the fact that love can be just as suffocating as murder.

I WILL BE POSTING MORE UPDATES, INCLUDING PRODUCTION DRAWINGS BY ANNA CORDINGLEY (WHICH WILL BE A WONDERFUL CHANGE FROM THE DRAWINGS DONE THUS FAR, BY ME). I'LL ALSO LET YOU KNOW HOW WE GO WITH CASTING AND PREPARATION!
THANKS FOR LISTENING.

Thanks very much! I'm going to write you an email, saying as much.

ARE YOU A WRITER OR FILM STUDENT WITH A SCRIPT? I will read your work and give you a script assessment and notes. Don't worry – It's my job, I'm qualified to do this sort of thing! (Usually, you'd pay this much to get an assessment done. In this case, you get a bunch more rewards too! And I get to make my film! WIN-WIN! Why wouldn't you do it?)
