Precious Metals is the title of an upcoming exhibition of new and recent photographs by 25-year old, Sydney-based artist, Jack Mannix at the Centre for Contemporary Photography from Friday 28 March - Sunday 25 May, 2014.
As part of the 2014 Next Wave Emerging Curators Program, emerging curator Sophie Kitson, is presenting a selection of 45 large Type-C photographs from Jack Mannix's extensive body of work spanning the last few years. Working with both Next Wave and CCP, Kitson has been able to implement and realise the proposed exhibition, while cover the associated gallery hire, travel, media and publicity collateral costs. The credible Colour Factory in Melbourne has generously assisted with the large photographic printing costs.
WE NEED YOUR PRECIOUS METAL!
The last and perhaps most tangible component we are hoping to realise is the development of a well-made square-shaped artist monograph, collaboratively compiled by both Kitson and Mannix. This comprehensive 80pp+ full-colour soft-cover photography book will house a curated selection of around 90 striking portraits and still life images made by Mannix over the last five years; plus contain a critical essay and an interview that reflects on some of the integral reoccurring themes of Mannix's work. This will retail at a mere $40, and be available for sale at the exhibition, online, at as a pre-sale as part of this campaign.
This project is important to us because it is Jack's first solo exhibition and Sophie's first large exhibition as an emerging curator. It is the first time Mannix has presented a large and cohesive collection of his photography in a fine art exhibition dedicated solely to the medium of his first creative love affair, in a gallery dedicated and specialising in photography, CCP. It is also somewhat of a milestone for both collaborators, having known each other for ten years and to be able to work together to realise this project in its entirety.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO SEE?
Exploring themes of loss, friendship, agony, ecstasy, isolation, addiction, sex and death, his gritty, documentary-style images cross the boundaries of both lo-fi and high-fashion photography.
Leaving home at 13, Mannix had his first paid photography job at 14, freelancing for Rolling Stone and VICE magazine. His documentation of various subjects and places in Sydney and Melbourne, including a steady collection of self-portraits, has seen his images widely published in national and international publications; amongst Mannix's plethora of other creative pursuits, such as his zine, Cocksucker Bruise or band, Drown Under.

Mannix's photographs touch on and represent the important social and critical dialogues occurring today -- notions of gender, transgender and queer theory; the re-inscribing of popular culture objects; hardship, failures and addiction; and representations of non-traditional family units, friendship circles and creative communities. One could liken elements of his work to photographers and artists such as Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, Dash Snow, Diane Arbus, Rennie Ellis, Richard Kern, Harmony Korine, John Waters, Genesis P-Orridge and Samuel Hodge.

REWARD UPDATE:
EVERY REWARD CATEGORY OVER $100 WILL ALSO RECEIVE A COPY OF 'PRECIOUS METALS' WITH THEIR DONATION, so you can have double the fun!
CRITICAL ESSAY CONTRIBUTIONS by none other than the wonderful ANGELA GARRICK and JACK SARGEANT.
How The Funds Will Be Used
With your help we can reach our first goal, which is to self-publish one run of high-quality 80pp offset printed Precious Metals artist monographs. These will be available to purchase during the exhibition dates at CCP Melbourne, in selected bookstores, online, and as a pre-sale as part of this campaign.
We are using a Sydney-based Australian printing company and professional negative scanner to help us achieve the highest quality full-colour reproductions of Mannix's photography. This is one incredibly beautiful and well-produced book! Printing will cost around $5,000 (stock, offset printing set-up, perfect binding, freight), designer fees $500, and the negative scanning costs $500 to transfer film to quality high-resolution images that will remain as true to original in the printing process. Printing in Australia and with a quick turn-around is realistically why the base price is a little more than printing overseas, but with the ability to be involved with our printers every step of the way, it is worth it!
Your donation will contribute directly to the costs needed to achieve the publication, using the offset printing process and on a quality eco-friendly stock. We have negotiated with a local designer to provide us with their expertise at a mate's rate without any additional charges. What you will be able to see and purchase is a well-made, intimate sized, thoughtfully considered artist book that will feature over 90 photographs of Jack Mannix's work - including images from his 2013 Working Girls series, and more.
We need your help and undying generosity to help make our project a reality! We must reach (or exceed) our target of $6,000 to make it happen. Even just by pre-ordering a copy of Precious Metals (at the $40 Reward bracket), will not only ensure the project is a success, but you will have already bought (freight included!) your own copy that can be mailed directly to your front door! If you are feeling like your want something a bit more special, why not order yourself a personalised signed version by the artist himself? There are 50 available.
NEXT STAGE - SUPERSEDING OUR TARGET
Ultimately, if we achieve a sum that goes beyond our target goal, all funding will go directly back into the printing costs associated with the development of the book. Mannix and Kitson have a selection of a further 40 photographs they would love to be able to include in the edition; and with any additional money raised with your help, we will have an opportunity to create a thicker publication of around 90-112pp so that we can include our intended selection of photographs for the book.
We intend to price our publication at $40, which for an artist monograph produced by the artist, including essays, interviews and personalised text, is the most affordable way to own a little part of Mannix's body of work.
Aesthetically, so you have an idea of what the book may look like, this Wolfgang Tillmans catalogue from his 2012 show at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm is a great example at what we have designed and intend to print:

Both Sophie and Jack are happy to answer any questions you might have in relation to the project. Feel free to email us to discuss. Sophie: [email protected], Jack: [email protected]
The Challenges

Our greatest challenge is to reach the intended target goal of $6,000 in order to achieve one run of the smaller-paged publication we have carefully researched for our budget. The best case scenario is that we reach our target, sell the edition and acquire enough money to be able to fund another run of the publication. Our other challenge is our tight deadline to go to print before the opening of the exhibition on March 27. We hope to meet our target to ensure we will have something to present for Opening Night.
If for whatever reason we are unsuccessful with our crowd-funding campaign entirely, we can at the very least generate enough personal income to print a leaflet-style brochure to view whilst at the exhibition.
