The Rainbow Serpent program aims to support Indigenous youth to play at the elite level in the NRL. The funding will support 20 Indigenous youth so that they can participate in this elite development program.
The program is created by former St George player Terry Wickey who aims to prepare the athletes both mentally and physically for what is required to not only make it to the top but to stay there. The program will support the Indigenous youth through:
Empowering cultural identity to enhance confidence and resilience;
Encourage and promote healthy lifestyle choices;
Providing mentoring for the youth by ex-players who are living away from home
Supporting the youth through increasing their financial literacy.
The Rainbow Serpent is an ongoing program and the Indigenous youth will:
Receive professional training at Peak Fitness from staff and special guests such as Solomon Haumono, Andrew Walker, Wes Pattern, Ben Wellington and Geoff Johnson to name a few
Undergo regular health checks of the players by organising visits to the GP and other health services as required and the monitoring of an ongoing fitness regime
Undertake one on one mentoring of the youth by ex NRL players
Partake in a buddy system so that the youth can provide support for each other
Undergo sessions to promote healthy lifestyle choices and to provide information session on mental health, healthy eating and financial literacy.
The Rainbow Serpent program was recently highlighted on WIN News as an essential project to support local youth. The video can be seen
