About

SUBLET is a 5-minute student film by students of Swinburne University.

The story of SUBLET centers on the intersections of share house living, queer scenes and activist scenes in Naarm (‘melbourne’) inspired by our writer/director’s life experiences. Also taking visual and narrative inspiration from the French New Wave and films like Frances Ha and TV shows like Fleabag, this sweet slice of life short takes as its focus the confusing decisions that many people must navigate in the early adulthood (mid-20s): where and with whom to live, how to become a financially independent human, how to maintain a sense of belonging and find support systems as friends, uni mates, family etc all start to move in their own directions.

As we are a cast and crew of young creatives we need your support to help fund the making of this film! Every dollar counts, so thank you for you support!

Much love,

The cast and crew of SUBLET

Synopsis

An awkward, people-pleasing but charming 20-something cis-man, Will, finds himself with only two days left on the sublet where he is staying in a queer communal share house. Although to begin with he felt quite out of place, he gradually finds a sense of belonging with the housemates, cooking communal food and dumpster diving together. When on the last day of his sublet he finds out that the room he has been subletting has come available long-term, he must decide whether to stay and continue the experiment of a different way of living, or to move into a one-bedroom apartment with his partner as he had originally planned and continue down the life path that is expected of him.
