How Humans Can Fly is the latest show by Backyard Theatre. We've been selected to produce our show at Dancehouse in the Melbourne Fringe Festival this year.

This show, co written and devised by dance artist Suze Smith and video designer Michael Carmody, delves into the rich terrain of mind, memory, dream and consciousness. Drawing on the poetics and embodied sensibility of the somatic practice Body-Mind Centering®, How Humans Can Fly combines story, movement, video and song to tell a tall tale of the human psyche.

How Humans Can Fly is a story about reaching out.

How do we go beyond what we know to a way of being that we don’t yet know?

Our goal is to make a really good show. Taking this work to Dancehouse is a step up for us. Having begun the show in the La Mama Explorations Season last year, being a part of the Melbourne Fringe at Dancehouse involves a re translation of the piece into a much bigger space. It is a bigger financial outlay than we've ever had before. And we hope to gain more exposure in the dance, theatre, hybrid performance field in Melbourne.

Why we need your support ____________

We need your support because we can't do it on our own. As independent theatre makers, its up to us to generate our own opportunities to develop original work and show it to our audiences. In order to grow as artists and creative practitioners, this means taking risks, both financially and creatively. This is Backyard Theatre's first Fringe Festival show, and is a leap into the unknown. We would really appreciate any support you could offer us!

What we've done all ready ___________

Michael and I have been joined by set designer Dayna Morrissey to check out the theatre at Dancehouse, and scope out our set up. We've re visited the script and story, looking for places to enhance and tighten the story. Right now we are knee deep in creative development and dreaming time. We're lucky enough to be in the performance venue to rehearse and develop the show, specifically for that site.
