Leaves by Lucy Caldwell
“We are where we come from?” That's not true. That's not true because if that's true there's no hope for any of us.
The Troubles in Northern Ireland are over. Almost a decade later, Lori returns home early from her first term at university. Neither her parents, nor her two teenage sisters, can quite grasp how and why everything went wrong. When their perfectly normal life is shattered, the family struggles to define who they are, where they might be headed and why.
The first play from Belfast-born writer Lucy Caldwell, Leaves won the George Devine Award 2006 and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2007. Some Company presents the Australian premiere of this poignant and surprisingly funny Irish play, directed by Rachel Chant.
“Leaves dramatises the stresses of this desolate situation with unblinking insight and quiet, rueful humour.”
- Paul Taylor, Independent

Rachel Chant and Harriet Gordon-Anderson
Leaves is the first play from Some Company, founded by actor Amanda Stephens-Lee. We are very excited and proud to be bringing Lucy's beautiful text to a new audience.
Some Company has brought together a fantastic team of artists for this project, lead by director Rachel Chant. Rehearsing over six days a week, Rachel and her cast are creating detailed performances to bring this Belfast family to life. Along the way, they must master the challenging Northern Irish accent. The results so far are compelling, to say the least.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Independent theatre being what it is, none of this work is being done with the guarantee of profit. Being involved in a project of this nature means that hours of paid work are sacrificed, and artists spend their late nights and weekends making a production the best it can be.
With your help, we can ensure that the artists on this production are financially supported. This means that they can continue practicing their craft and making great work, and you get to see excellent theatre!
We truly believe we have put together the best small team possible, and the Kings Cross Theatre is the perfect venue for this intimate work. We believe in keeping the independent and small-to-medium sector alive and thriving, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for what you can afford to give.
The Challenges
We're a new company in a new theatre, so we don't have an established audience base yet. We'll have to work hard to create buzz and get bums on seats. Fortunately, we have a passionate team with a diverse range of backgrounds and skill sets to draw on.
