OUR STORY
Table Wines is a vehicle of exploration and creativity for us (Max and Jimmy), as a way for us to get our ideas and the wines we love to drink, out into the world.
In our work together as creatives, helping guide food and drink producers to communicate their story, we've had a heap of access and exposure the the wine industry. And through this, in our own way, we both wanted to grow our involvement.
We see a great opportunity to support organically grown grapes, our sustainability ethos and our passion for hyper drinkable wines.
Table Wines is the vehicle for us to get our ideas out into the world through connection, doing better and delicious drinks.
THE ROAD SO FAR
In March 2023, we bought 3 tonnes of organic/biodynamically grown grapes from the Riverland, transported said grapes to the Barossa and made 230 cases of delicious, minimal intervention wine. We named our business Table Wines as a tip of the hat to wine that is made around the world for humble enjoyment. The nonnas and nonnos growing and picking their own grapes and making delicious lunch wines in places like Siciliy and Sardinia to offer to friends and family.
Our combined 15 years working with organic and consciously grown primary produce lead us down a path of creating the most sustainable and responsible wines we could manage.
+ The fruit - Biodynamic and Organically grown.
+ The varieties - Climate appropriate for our dry, hot conditions.
+ The packaging - light glass, recycled sugar cane mulch labels, compostable corks.
Our north star for this business is to limit our environmental impact as much as possible.
THE WINES
We made our wines under the careful and learned tutelage of Master MJ Corbett of Vanguardist Wines, a debt we can never fully repay. And for the 2023 vintage we produced our wines with a shared vision - pick the fruit early to maintain natural acidity and freshness, and do as little as possible in the winery to maintain the integrity of the fruit. Our 2023 Nero d'Avola and Vermentino are both in this mould - refreshing, honest and made to be consumed with food.
Nero d'Avola – Pane di Casa
A native red grape of Sicily and what most 'table' wines on the island is made from. We chose 'Nero' because we love its versatility, it's suitability to the South Australian climate and our fondness of the grape when it is made in a 'light red' style.
Our 'Pane di Casa' is a ripping lunch wine with just-a-bit-less-than-medium body, great natural acidity and a lovely savoury palate. Fruit forward with all the blackberry, pomegranate and roast tomato on the nose. Some forest floor savouriness and a sprinkle of tannin to round things out. Enjoy with salumi, charcuterie, pizza, pasta et al. Loves a chill. Throw one in the esky!
Vermentino – Fish in a Tin
We wanted the perfect wine to drink with a freshly ripped-open can of sardines and we couldn't go past Vermentino. It's another grape that loves the hot, dry conditions of Southern Italy, which means it grows just as well here in SA. The citrus and green apple tang and the 'sea spray' finish of Vermentino makes it the perfect food wine for salty, spicy and slippery foods. Out of sheer luck our Fish in a Tin landed at 9.5% alcohol which is officially low-alc, good info for those wanting to keep it together and the next long table lunch.
Like bobbing for tropical fruits in the Mediterranean sea. It's all passionfruit and pineapple up front and slides into briny salinity on the finish. Nice high line acidity. Bright and zingy.
SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
From day dot, a major focus for us has been on finding packaging solutions that have the absolute minimum impact on our environment — whether that be through conserving resources, maximising recyclability, or using bio-sourced materials. While there are myriad ways for us to keep improving and plenty of creative solutions for us to explore, the vision for a completely sustainable packaging system for is in our DNA.
Light Glass
The keen observer may notice that our bottles are on the lighter side — and they are! We've sought out light glass bottles because they conserve resources in their production and minimises impact throughout their lifecycle before being recycled.
Compostable Closures (A.K.A. Corks)
It may seem old hat, but when it comes to environmental impact, cork is a stopper that goes alright. Naturally compostable and produced with 100% bio-based bindings, it's the natural choice.
Bagasse Labels
For vintage no. one, we've made the choice to slap a bagasse label on our bottles. Bagasse is a material made from sugar cane pulp which makes it 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. Bonza!
The Future
We're nowhere near finished. Moving forward, our goal is to maximise our potential for minimising our impact — and a big part of this launch campaign is about unlocking the ability to continue pushing what we can achieve in sustainability. On the vision board for future releases — bag in box wine for superior resource conservation, aluminium cans for 100% recyleability, a fully carbon neutral production cycle... and ultimately, the development of a system that allows us to contribute positively and productively to our environment.

Budget Overview
GOAL
In our pre-launch campaign we hope to raise $20,000.
This money will help us recoup some of the costs of setting up the business, buying fruit, making our wine, and getting it into bottle and also puts us in a strong position to secure 2024 vintage grapes and build on our sustainability credentials for next and future years with organic and (zero) carbon certification.
