Tall Sad Girl and Short Punk Girl Are Friends
Based on the original story by zine maker David Witteveen, ‘Tall Sad Girl and Short Punk Girl are Friends' is an LGBTQI+ coming-of-age drama that pays homage to Melbourne’s independent art scene through its production design, soundtrack and characters. It's a film that celebrates the power of vulnerability and friendship in shaping our identities through the perspective of a queer teenager.
This is a film about courage and acceptance. It’s a film for our teenage selves, the wallflowers, the weirdos, and those who are finding their way.
'Tall Sad Girl and Short Punk Girl are Friends’ follows rebellious and outspoken 15-year-old Kat. After being bullied as a kid, she is led to believe that close friendships lead to disappointment and potential harm. That is until she is paired up in class with the quiet girl, Amanda.
Amanda takes interest in Kat’s lifestyle and the two form an unlikely friendship. As they spend more time together, Kat begins to learn the value of opening up to others but also begins to see Amanda in a romantic light.
One day, the girls are invited by Ian to drinks at the park with his friends. When they arrive, Kat is surprised to see her former bully, Emily among the group. As the night goes on, Amanda and Ian hit it off, and Emily calls Kat a dyke. Scared she’d been outed and angry with Amanda for ditching her for the popular group, Kat storms off.
When Amanda comes looking for her, the two girls get into a heated fight, and Kat begins to cry. Amanda sits beside her and they talk it out. Kat admits that she might be gay, but doesn’t disclose her feelings for Amanda, as she’d rather preserve this new friendship than risk it all for romance.
