Project Kukunda aims to empower children from struggling communities in Africa, by providing them with means of staying in school and focusing on school. Kukunda sends personalised pencil cases to children in Africa, as well as assist with paying school fees for children with a greater need.
This year we are partnering with Harvesters in Sport Ministry (HIS), and we will be fundraising to buy pencil cases for 80 children that attend the feeding program that is run by HIS. HIS run a feeding program in a rural village called Mt Hampden, which is about 27 km from Harare the capital city of Zimbabwe. HIS also run other activities with the children such as helping them with their school work, sporting activities, reading as well as teaching the children from the word of God.
We would also like to start a school library for the children. This will help improve the children's literacy, giving them confidence in their school work. HIS find that many children drop out of school, because the children take on household chores or in some cases start working from a young age to support the family (herding cows, or baby sitting other children). This is accepted in the community and is not seen as child abuse. As a result the children drop out of school, of if they attend school are not interested in school.
By giving the children a stationary pack children are more likely to be interested in going to school as to participate in school work, thereby increasing the child's confidence, grades and potentially increasing the chances of the child staying in school.

We would like to raise $1000 or more. The funds will be used for buying more stationery and books as well as postage. Any extra funds we make, will go towards paying school fees for the children with the greatest need. Primary schooling is not free in Zimbabwe, and children from the village are most likely to drop out of school, because their families cannot afford to pay $30 per term (there are 3 terms in a year)
The breakdown of how the funds will be used is as follows:
40 pencil cases x 12.50 = $ 500
Books = $ 200
Postage = $ 300
TOTAL $ 1,000 00
Extra funds will be used to pay school fees for the children.
Our main challenge will be to raise enough funds to buy books to start a children's library for the local school were the children from Mt Hampden go.
Our target is to purchase at least 25 - 30 books for each age group, so that there is a variety for the children to read.
I am also worried about the cost of posting books, because they might be much more heavier that stationery.
