Network of Lines - Debut album
In May 2012, I was commissioned by APRA and the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival to write a new work. The piece I wrote, "If On a Winter's Night a Traveller", was based on the 1979 postmodern novel by Italian author Italo Calvino. In it I attempted to capture the unique narrative style of the novel and wrote a suite of ten pieces that are linked through improvisation into one singular work. I also started the ensemble Network of Lines, to perform the work which includes some of my favourite Australian musicians. Rather than bore you with all the details right now, feel free to read an interview I did with Miriam Zolin (from extempore) that was posted on her website here and discusses the concepts behind the composition and ensemble. While you're at it, check out this great review of the piece from a performance late last year.
In February this year, we recorded this piece with Robin Gray at Allan Eaton Studios in St Kilda. I have been painstakingly editing the work since then and am about to head into the mixing stage. This is where you come in! Making an album is a serious financial undertaking and my funds are starting to be stretched thin. I will be spending 5 days in July mixing the album with Joe Talia at his studio in Brunswick. Following that comes the mastering (I haven't settled on an engineer yet but I'm hoping to use Valgeir Sigurðsson at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik). I will also be commissioning local artist Sophie Morris to hand draw an elaborate artwork for the album and local designer Thomas Green to incorporate this into his design for the album.
This album and the music contained therein represent a massive body of work that I would really like to share with you all. Network of Lines is an ensemble of outstanding players who have performed the music with precision and finesse. I really hope to do their performance justice and with your help it'll sound as good as it possibly can! As we move through the process I will be updating my pledgers with new mixes of the tracks and other little tidbits. Get involved.
