2017 Short Student Film Project
Last year I launched my first Pozible Fund campaign for a documentry about the homeless here in Melbourne. I have just finished that its ready to be released. That campaign is located at pozible.com/project/2016-homeless-documentary
Now in my last year in my bachelor of Screen Media Degree at Victoria Univeristy I need to produce a short film. This will be under 30 minutes long and take the audience through a few genres. Firstly in Film Noir, black and white realm before heading through a few others including Comedy and Horror before ending in a rush in Action genre. Currently I'm planning this interesting project and found more than a few issues.
This project is going to completely different to last year documentary that got pushed back for months. Our film window is in the second half of July and the whole project needs to be completed by the end of September where we hope to have this production screened at Sun Theatre in Yarraville. Therefore I hope to produce a high quality and engaging film project which will intertain as well possible educating the audience. I've writen a small story taking a number of characters through a number of plots and not all of them survive to the end.
Due to having a weapon in a couple of the scenes I need to have an armourer on set for the day and found a preffesional one here in Melbourne. John Fox has worked on many film projects including "Tomorrow when the War began and Stike Back" to name a couple. You can check out his work at http://www.motionpicturearmourer.com/
I have also already started to bring crew members into the project and been looking at locations in and around Melbourne. as well advertising for talent. I also have already found a "Art Director" to help me sort out the scenes and props etc.
Producing film productions is what I want to do for the next twenty years or so...I really enjoy it but its not about me. I like to bring people who have done it tough into a industry they may not ever have had the chance to work in. More than a few of the crew who worked on last years project are coming for this one.. In the near future, after I complete my degree I plan to launch a small production company and continue to produce film productions..Since starting last years project I have also launched and run a YouTube channel which is can be found easily by searching for 'Trevor Brown' on YouTube.
This project is a important step hopefully taking me further into the Film Industry, I appreciate all the investors who helped me last year and everyone who supports this ambitious project. If you require further information about this project simply send me an email at [email protected]

How The Funds Will Be Used
Due to the tight schedule and what we have planned our budget is higher than expected.
The main costs include (but not limited to)
*Hiring a van for a week, to take the crew and talents around the varous locations spread around Melbourne. Some the the scenes need to filmed at night. The costs include fuel., insurance, road cover, tolls (some of the roads around Melbourne have them attached...) Parking (some of the scenes will be in the middle of the city, so....) This is around $2500
*Film Permits / Location agreement. This project is completely different to the homeless documentary which we filmed mostly on the streets . We need specifical locations to match the scenes in the story. Therefore some of the locations require dollars to get the authorisation to film. Some of the scenes are on private locations while others in the city are run by corporate organisations. At this point we are looking at around $2,500 just for these locations.
**Art Department: We need some props, clothing etc...In one of the scenes we need produce a office for our Detective and make sure it matches 'Film Noir' genre. I also need to look after our 'Talent' so want sure they have what need. I can't believe how well my Art Director and me work together, she's young but keen and worked on a few film projects already.
**Part of the Assessment requires me to produce Film Posters for this project. Also as this project may be screened at Sun Theatre in Yarraville I need a Marketing and Promotion budget. I'm also going to put this video onto DVD's for some of the big investors and the crew / talent.
**Our armourer is going cost us a bit which includes him bringing the weapon, train our actors and making sure everything remains safe. After the recent death in QLD of a muscian during filming of a music video I simply can't play around with this.
**Equipment. While I have most of the equipment I need there some specific things I need for this (And future projects.) As the crew is getting bigger - I need more communication radios. We got some last year and they work unreal but I need a few more as the projects are getting bigger. This is serious component as its helps me to organise the crew and make sure they remain safe especially as for some of the scenes we will be filming at night and in the middle of the city. I also need a 'Chilled Smoke" machine for some of the scenes in the 'Horror' genre for this project. We plan to run some chilled smoke down some stone stairs at night..should look awesome! There is some PEP (Personal Protective Equipment) I need for the crew especially as we will be filming in the night in the middle of the city at some point.
**Catering. Apperantly I need to feed the crew and talent, not sure where they get idea but there it is...LOL As I have mentioned the crew is bigger and we have actual 'Actors' and I do want to look after them. We plan to film all the scenes during a 'film window' that will be only go for a week. and we will need to go. We will be busy and some of the locations need me to pay for catering as we can't bring food etc onsite. I don't make the rules but I do have to play by them.
*Contingency....I have learned from last years project that do need a little up sleeve. WE HAVE TO PRODUCE THIS THING. A camer falls over or we need an extra permit or something....I can't push this project back even a week so I need to make sure I have options. The other thing is sould I get the funds I require this is going to push me off my Centrelink payments for over a month so I'll need something to survive on, pay my rent etc.
The Challenges
Biggest challenges at this point include finding the specific locations that we need and locking them down.
Obviously Melbournes weather could be an issue but we will have to just deal with that as best we can (this is where some of that contingency money could be used up.
The other way the contingency money will help is if I get to a point where my Visual Effects skills just aren't up to scratch, I could then get someone in to help - Again WE HAVE TO PRODUCE THIS THING. I want it to be a high quality production.
