'The Greening of Grace' is a bold new work by one of Australia's leading performers, William Zappa, whose previous work, 'Winter's Discontent', received rave reviews in its inaugural season at the Ensemble Theatre and return season at the Darlinghurst Theatre in Sydney.

Synopsis

Grace may be old, she may be frail, but she isn’t a victim. Her life as she knows it is altered by one shocking event. Resisting her daughter’s attempts to protect her and inspired by the memory of her late husband, and the determination of a passionate ally, Grace becomes an unlikely eco-warrior; a role model for our times, who demonstrates that every individual has the power to change the world.

'The Greening of Grace' is a bold new work from Australian writer and performer, William Zappa, about the transformational power of choice.

Production Background

When I first heard a reading of The Greening of Grace in 2008 I was captivated by the story of Grace and, as the actors brought the words to life, it sang to me. It’s taken four years to bring this exceptional work to the stage and I am delighted to have the opportunity to produce it. In the character of Grace I see a strong and powerful woman who refuses to be brought down by the terrible thing that has happened to her; and in that I find inspiration.

William and I are very grateful to have the chance to present the play in the newly branded Theatre 19 (formerly Darlinghurst Theatre) as the first play to be presented there after Darlinghurst Theatre get ready to make their transition to the new Eternity Playhouse.

It has all come about quite suddenly and so we are working very hard to bring together all the elements needed to get the production to the stage. It's not always easy to get a show ready with less than three months notice. We are delighted to have assembled a stellar cast in Maggie Blinco, Don Reid, Wendy Strehlow and Nigel Turner-Carroll with designer Amanda Macnamara on board. William Zappa is also taking on the role of director and we are looking forward to commencing rehearsals in October.

The play tackles several themes including violence against women, family relations and global warming. Some of this is quite confronting but the overall message of the play is one of hope and this is what I take away from it. The idea that no matter how small the act, we can all make a difference and together create the world that we want to live in.

Some amazing work is birthed through co-operative, independent theatre and it is a constant amazement to me how people are prepared to work for minimal wages in order to bring it to life. It would be great to be able to reward all the people who are working so hard to make this production successful and with your help, we can.
