'I'll Be There' is an inspiring music theatre show featuring songs and stories of solidarity that people really connect with. It was created, produced and performed by the Victorian Trade Union Choir in collaboration with award winning playwright Rebecca Lister and our musical director Michael Roper.

The show has already had two sold out seasons in Melbourne at Trades Hall in 2012 and at La Mama in 2013.

"A year or so ago I went to see a show by the Victorian Trade Union Choir called "I'll be there". It was sooooo good. I felt so proud and moved when I saw this piece. I want lots of people to be able to see it, to be reminded of the importance of community and union support and to hear some very fine music. Help them to fund their campaign to take "I'll Be There" to places further afield. The VTUC has been together for a long time, singing for us all at rallies, protests, adding heart to events, collaborating with various other musicians - and I have been a very lucky one of those - and performing really important shows such as "Dust" and "We Built This City". This is one of those really genuinely worthy crowd funding campaigns. Not just to get one artist's album produced, or an artist onto a plane. This choir is inclusive and very much a power for good. Please help them get their excellent message to regional Victoria and beyond! And please share this message with absolute abandon!"

Help us to get this show on the road!

We want to take 'I'll be there' to Victorians who have been hard hit by manufacturing closures, floods and fires to encourage, support and inspire people - and give them a good night out!
We are working in partnership with La Mama Mobile and local Trades and Labour Councils to take the show to Geelong, Morwell, Portland, Ballarat and Shepparton.

I'll be there - the whole choir loving it!

What audience members have said about the show....

"The individual stories provided relevance and authenticity to hold the audience’s attention, and of course the singing was excellent."

"Congratulations to you all. The wonderful MCs and personal stories share were really appreciated by the group of people I went with too."

"Congratulations on a fabulous show. We all loved it. Celebrate well, you deserve it! "

"Hey congratulations – it was a beautiful show. I felt so happy and so proud of that sweet funny wonderful committed mob."

"I was really amazed at how inspiring the whole performance was and how it looked like everyone was having a blast!"

"I liked the way the history of the choir and union movement were woven into the personal stories. And the humour! And the balance between text and song. I liked that there was acting but it didn’t distract from the music. The music was exceptional. I also liked the red banding on the clothes."

"….I really wanted to stay around and chat to all of you who I know because I so wanted to congratulate you, but I was completely undone by Mary’s song - what a song! - and had failed to regain my composure - and had to totter off to my car and limp home in a rather damp mess. You are part of a very wonderful thing and your own dedication shines. But really truly, it was a triumph. Please pass on my gushings! "

"I was delighted and moved by last night’s show. It was absolutely marvelous. So much more than just really well delivered songs. You’re all such good narrators and actors too! But the truth and the commitment to the cause were wonderful as well. You’re all bloody awesome!"

Who are we?

The Victorian Trade Union Choir is a group of 30 committed trade union members who believe in the power of song. We sing at union meetings, rallies, protests, picket lines, conferences, celebrations, concerts and music festivals –to support workers and connect to the broader community.
Here’s what Arnold Zable wrote about the choir:
I have long been a fan of the choir. Love the songs, the stories the songs tell, and their origins. The choir is keeping alive a grand tradition. The songs still resonate, and connect with contemporary struggles for social justice.
