This project is to assist in the realisation of a product, which I have been trying to bring to the market for the past three years.

The product is a laptop stand and is named as such.

My name is Vincent Chan Kun Wa and I am a not so young designer attempting to start my own practice. I have worked in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture and environmental sustainability for the past 10 years. I currently live and work in Melbourne.

Product

The Laptop Stand is a low cost, recyclable, lightweight, readily portable and user-friendly product. It has been designed to suit all laptop types and sizes.

The design allows the laptop screen to be opened and positioned at eye level during use. This helps with ergonomics and lessens the strain on neck muscles. The keyboard lies on a forward inclined position, directed to the user and enhancing their comfort when typing.

The Laptop Stand can also be used with an external keyboard and mouse or in a variety of ways.    I am confident that users will find alternative ways to do this and that they will also be able to use it with another device – a tablet comes to mind or a small drawing board perhaps.

With minimum surface contact with the laptop, the Laptop Stand allows for suitable passive cooling to occur.

The Laptop Stand is made from 100% post-consumer recycled waste made into a 10mm thick tough board. This is then printed with the graphics and cut into shape. The Laptop Stand is completely recyclable and can be safely disposed of in the paper-recycled bin at its end-of-life use.

As for wear and tear, the only significant area to be affected is the protruding edge where the laptop is supported. The photograph illustrates the effects of three years of daily use and testing on an early prototype.

Design

The design is modelled after a sheet of A4 paper with which we are all very familiar and use on a daily basis. As such the Laptop Stand can be easily packed in most laptop bags or stationery folders.

The Laptop Stand is aptly packaged in a string envelope.

Project

The aim of this project is to collect enough interest and funding to produce the first 500 units and to test the market reaction to this product. This is the minimum production quantity required to reach a reasonable target cost.

One of the key objectives is to support local manufacturing and the use of recyclable materials, beyond just making a functional product.

I have had lengthy discussions with the product supplier and service contractors about the fabrication costs in order to be able to supply the Laptop Stand at a reasonable price.

The funding pledges in this project are an introductory offer and have been calibrated accordingly. The Laptop Stand will retail at AUD$30 each if this project is successful.

So far only one off prototypes have been produced for testing and production quality control assessment purposes.
