If you're anything like us, you’re probably fed up with people telling you that in order to be sustainable, you need to give up everything you care about, strip back to basics and make extreme lifestyle changes - right?
Well, we believe that being conscious shouldn't have to be a chore. It shouldn't be boring, extreme or overwhelming, and why can't it look good? Why can't it be vibrant and young?
HESSIAN Magazine is a biannual print publication that brings you sustainable youth fashion that is contemporary. We are breaking free of the nostalgia for a past we never lived, instead looking to the future we want to save.
HESSIAN prefers to promote a concept of ‘subtle sustainability’, which is all about making changes within your means. We encourage people to support local production, independent design, ethical, eco-friendly and innovative wares.
Put simply, HESSIAN is the bridge that spans that intimidating divide between the hippies and everyone else. Kidding! (But not really).
Our aim is to create a publication that:
+ Showcases Australian and international fashion through a multi-faceted approach, encouraging even the most subtle shifts towards a conscientious future.
+ Embodies an ethos of 'subtle sustainability'. We’re publishing on 100% post consumer, recycled paper with organic inks through Printgraphics in Melbourne. Rather than using regular, cheap 'perfect' binding, we have opted for the more durable and longer-lasting 'burst' binding as HESSIAN is designed to be kept and reread.
+ Refuses to airbrush/retouch our editorial models.
+ Once we succeed in becoming a self-sustaining business, we will put a large percentage of profits back into establishing and funding sustainable fashion initiatives. This aim will include working with universities to encourage future generations of designers to adapt to present challenges in the textile, clothing and footwear industry (stylishly of course).

Since releasing his independent debut EP ‘City’ in 2012 Hayden has supported the likes of Tom Odell, Matt Corby, Willy Mason, Oliver Tank and Missy Higgins. He’s played festivals including Falls Festival, Gorgeous Festival and NYE On The Hill and has received significant attention with international syncs for his songs on USA TV series ‘Suits’, MTVs ‘Awkward’ and new CW series ‘The 100’.

How The Funds Will Be Used
The funds will be used to cover the majority of printing costs. The total amount for 1,000 copies is $8,700.
Our target of $7,000 is the minimum we need to be able to go to print. If we can raise $10,000 we can print 2,000 copies, or over $11,000 will get us to 3,000 copies and a more extensive national (and perhaps international) stockist list.
We are also planning a pretty rad launch party. Any donation over $10 will get you free entry to our LAUNCH PARTY with plenty of booze, tunes and a door prize sponsored by Lush Cosmetics, valued at over $90.

The Challenges
HESSIAN faces a huge challenge in overcoming the current limitations of the fashion industry. Primarily, our largest obstacle is the lack of cool AND sustainable fashion. We believe however that over time, out of both choice and necessity, people will become more engaged with sustainable fashion. Designers will continue to emerge and create aesthetically pleasing, sustainable clothing and the stigma attached to ethical fashion will gradually fade.
We will play a role in putting sustainability at the forefront of fashion by encouraging designers to engage with sustainability and by giving emerging designers a platform to share their ethos and innovative designs. By repackaging sustainable fashion in a way that is fresh, exciting and young, we hope that it will become the standard going forward and an integral part of the fashion industry as a whole.
