Sometime in 2013, when the sun attempted to shine in London and the dark sought to overcome Tasmania a spark of an idea began to glow. A lone Tasmanian writer in the ancient city of London and a group of Tasmanians who reside on the island began a correspondence about writing and Transportation was born.

Now a fully formed project, Transportation; islands and cities is a collection of short stories from London and Tasmania that will be published in book form in late 2014. We have invited some writers from London and Tasmania and opened submissions to everyone else in these two disparate yet similar places.

With changes in arts funding and a decline in Tasmanian publishers and opportunities for Tasmanian writers, Transportation seeks to bring excellent writing from Tasmania to the world. We need your help to do this!
Those reading the work of Tasmanian writers know we have a rich vein of writers on the ground - not just in numbers, but in quality, diversity and creativity. This book draws on a unique international cultural exchange for both writers and readers and abundant opportunities for the writers from both sides of the world - in particular Tasmanian writers.

Submissions are now closed, the selections, editing, typesetting, design, printing, marketing and distribution are ahead of us.
We pay our writers, we pay for printing and there have already been hundreds of hours of volunteer time poured into this project. We need your help to bring the final stages of this project to fruition. Your help is so valuable for not only our individual writers, but for literature in Tasmania.

How The Funds Will Be Used

Transportation has come a long way on volunteer labour - and the editors, both web and hardcopy, the event organisers, the marketing and planning people, all working at a professional level, will continue to volunteer their time.  We believe strongly that we must pay our authors -  and we also need to pay for printing, postage and some marketing to get the book out and onto your shelves.

The $10 000 that we use here will be used as follows:
$5500 to pay our authors and illustrators
$3000 to bring the book to print
$1000 postage and collateral
We have adopted a print on demand model for the print copies of the book and will also be publishing digitally. Print on demand, which now offers amazing quality printing, allows us to do literally that, print on demand. You can not miss out. As we can print in both London and Australia, postage costs will be cheaper but we must still pay around $6 for each copy of the book posted and that's just in Australia.

The Challenges

Our biggest challenge right now is raising to money to pay the writers and to go to print,
If this crowdfunding does not work this time (though we believe it will) we will review the timeframe and be back again!
We are also working with private donors to ensure we can bring thie project to fruition.
