I've been selected to create a new work for Proximity Festival 2014 and I need a little help to make it happen!

Anatomy’s Confection, invites audiences to take part in a private lesson in human flesh. Come with an open mind and leave with an intimate body of knowledge. Part social surgery, part anatomy lesson, part sculpture workshop, this new work seeks to make female sexual anatomy visible and delightfully conversational through a special labour of love.

Did you know?

It is only the tenth year since the detailed, accurate description of the clitoris was re-filtered into key anatomy textbooks and medical curriculum, after years of censorship!

That the revisions were initiated by Australian Urologist, Dr Helen O'Connel - though there was centuries of evidence that this organ spread through the abdomen (it's huge) - she had to LOBBY the Medical Board to have it reinstated in texts and curriculum! It took her 7 years;

That the first 3d sonograph of the clitoris was published in 2005 - 20 years after the male anatomy;

That only two years ago the first charges were laid in Australia for Female Genital Mutilation.

Anatomy's Confection is situated within Fremantle Arts Centre's history as a women’s home and maternity training centre, this project responds to the urgent need for further research on female sexual anatomy and function and the importance of widespread education on this subject.

Thanks to Creative Partnerships, every dollar you pledge up to $1375 will be matched through their Match Crowdfunding for the Independent Arts Sector initiative, provided I reach my target!

This work will be developed and presented as part of Proximity Festival at Fremantle Arts Centre 22 October – 1 November 2014. Proximity Festival is the first platform in Australia dedicated to the creation and presentation of one-on-one intimate performances. Co-founded by James Berlyn, Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey, Proximity Festival provides critical peer support, encouraging artists from all disciplines to experiment with new modes of practice in the creation of participatory art. www.proximityfestival.com

How The Funds Will Be Used

Proximity Festival 2014 takes place in Fremantle, WA with artists committing to 5 weeks there - a 2 week lab, 1 week production, and 2 week season. The project aims to allow each audience member to take away a sculpture they create.

I'm seeking to raise the remaining minimum development and delivery costs
Artist Fees & Development, Accommodation $2,250
Materials for each audience member to create a sculpture $500

The Challenges

It takes a special kind of context to present a performance work that is intimate, political, challenging and fun. The environment that James Berlyn, Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey have created in Proximity Festival is just the right one and it’s on the other side of the country from where I live!

This project is important to advocate for social change. The intimacy of this one-on-one performance means that whilst it may have a deeper level of engagement from each audience member it will have a limited reach of less than 120 people in the Proximity festival season. To ensure that the content is something that each audience member takes away for discussion with their family and friends they will leave with a small object that they will create during the experience and that I will document to accumulate in a collection that can be exhibited in another context.
