The Stephanie Lake Company is a new Melbourne based contemporary dance company. We began working on Double Blind in 2014 and are thrilled that it will premiere at Sydney Festival in 2016. Excitingly, Double Blind will be the first work under the Stephanie Lake Company banner. 

I'm fortunate to be working with a dynamo team on this show. Amber Haines, Alisdair Macindoe, Kyle Page and Alana Everett are dancing. Robin Fox again collaborates as composer. Ben Shaw is the lighting designer and Harriet Oxley is costume designer. 



Double Blind interrogates the perils of obedience with electricity, intricacy and grace. What if internal conflict was made external? Inspired in part by real-world experiments in the conflict between personal ethics and our obedience to those in a position of authority, Double Blind sees the performers twist and vibrate, and ultimately bend and break under authority.



To me Double Blind is it’s own universe – a universe of four – in which different combinations and configurations sets a series of consequences in motion. These four are constantly at the whim of each other as well as some other unseen force. It’s as if they are subjects in one another’s experiment – as well as mine.



This project allows me to continue developing my fascination with movement invention – working with speed, complexity, intricacy and image. It is a very physical work - funny at times, dark at others. It uses a highly detailed, rhythmic and precise choreographic language on the one hand and is spontaneous and reckless on the other. This duality fuels the work.

Stephanie Lake Company is a new and independent dance company in Australia. Although we've been lucky to receive project funding we don't yet have a permanent home or annual funding.



We spend an enormous amount of energy getting projects off the ground and bringing them to audiences. Securing funding, finding presentation partners and venues and weathering the instability of the current funding climate takes a lot of work. But it's all worth it once the pieces come to fruition. 

We're very lucky to be supported by Sydney Festival for the premiere of Double Blind and grateful for the funding of this project so far - but we need this last injection of support to get us over the line.
