ALAS is an acronym for "All Light, All Shadow". This concept is the basis of inspiration for the brand; our colourful, comfortable garments take the wearer from day to night, waking to sleeping.

The acronym also alludes to the idea of transparency in the supply chain, as we wish to shine light on our manufacturing practices and organically grown cotton. To read more about our commitment to sustainability, head to our website and go to the 'about' section.



While we are proud that our label is stocked by a range of stores from little, local eco boutiques to large international online platforms, we are still an emerging label that needs your support. Overseas sourcing/sampling/production trips are expensive, but it is so important to us as designers to meet with our producers in person, to build relationships and trust.

Attending this trade fair will be extremely beneficial to the sustainable aspect of our business. We will be able to meet new organic fabric suppliers, learn more about the organic cotton supply chain and network with other businesses who share our aspirations. We believe that sharing knowledge with other people is an important part of creating change.

In November we will also be sampling our range for Summer 2014/15. We would like to extend our range beyond organic cotton to incorporate other eco fibres and innovative fabric blends. We also plan to introduce new products lines such as slippers!

Sourcing the highest quality materials is very difficult without visiting the suppliers and producers themselves. In addition, we are committed to sourcing ethically produced materials and labour, so visiting these factories, business, farms and organisations gives us (and the customer) peace of mind!



We work as a design team, therefore it is essential that we both go to India. While Kelly's strengths lie in eco fabric sourcing, Betony manages the technical side of production.

This trip will potentially turn ALAS into something bigger and brighter, all the while remaining true to our motto "comfort with a conscience without compromising good design". Our customers can relax in style, with peace of mind knowing that they are contributing good to the clothing industry.

As we have already established a relationship with our current factory, and they have offered to help organise the sourcing trip, many of the risks associated travel around India are greatly reduced. Having local people to travel with is beneficial in so many ways, whether that may be by helping book that obscure train that only leaves at 2am every second Wednesday, or warning you against some dodgy street food.
Our friends at the factory also have extensive knowledge in the exact field that we are researching, that being organic and eco textile sourcing. So we shouldn't have too much trouble tracking down what we need.

Perhaps our only obstacle is time, in that we will be trying to fit a lot into three weeks, and India is known for having quite a chaotic relationship with the clock. Ambitious we may be, but where we would be be without ambition, hey?
