GALÁPAGOS by Mandy Ord

47 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 1 colour risgraph insides, 4 colour risograph cover.

The Walking Dead sounds terrible. Unbearable to watch yet impossible to resist. So we switch to a documentary about the charmed life of a colony of sea going iguanas. What could possibly go wrong?

When deadly pursuit is the new normal what chance do we have?

Mandy Ord’s passion for the medium of comics has led her to present lectures and workshops to schools, universities, festivals and community groups across Australia and internationally. She has collaborated with theatre companies, writers, musicians, historians and audio units for animations and online content. She is currently working with local youth on a Lavington Library art project and her recent work with local Wiradjuri language experts can be seen on the new NBN Box Trail around Albury.

In 2018 Mandy illustrated her first book for children, Chalk Boy, written by Margaret Wild and published by Allen & Unwin. Previous books published by Finlay Lloyd include NY, Rooftops, and Sensitive Creatures which received a White Ravens award at the Bologna Book Fair.

MYSTICAL BOY SCOUT 4 by Aaron Billings

120 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 2 colour risgraph insides, 3 colour risograph cover with thermographic gloss finish.

Mystical Boy Scout is the physical manifestation of homosexual resilience, extravagance and sexual prowess, and he’s finally settling down with his boyfriend Alex in a beat-up share house. That is until the date of their scheduled house inspection, which they are far from prepared for. Can gay magic help you pass a house inspection? What kind of secrets is he sitting on? What would you do to protect your boyfriend and your boyfriend’s pet chicken? All these questions beg an answer.

"The queer share house fairytale we've all been waiting for. Smoky, scratchy, bright, serious, poetic, and funny, Aaron Billings presents a mini grand unified theory of supernatural visitors, real estate inspections, overly perfect boyfriends, and the Russian space dog, Laika. It's really a story for the lovesick puppy in each of us, a book that charms you, freaks you out a bit, and gives you all the feelings."

- Ronnie Scott

"This book is funny and strange... I wish all the world was as gay as Mystical Boy Scout"

- Tommi Parrish

Aaron Billings has been published in Meanjin, The Lifted Brow, Going Down Swinging, Canary Press, Firefly zine, Castles in the Sky anthology and many others for drawing, comic work and writing.  He has exhibited quilts, embroidery  and paintings with Blindside gallery, Tinning street gallery, Off the Kerb galleries, No Vacancy gallery and many more. He’s an around town kinda boy. His favourite movie is ‘Night of the Hunter’, his favourite colour is rose pink and he’s an emotional Capricorn.

SWIMSUIT by Rachel Ang

68 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 2 colour risgraph insides, 3 colour risograph cover.

Jenny catches up with a former flame at the local pool. The sun is bright and casts dark shadows in the water. There is violence even in this mundane place - a whirlpool through which Jenny swims, even as it pulls her under.

“Rachel Ang’s Swimsuit is sensitive & subtle & a little bit devastating. The tender attention she gives to her details - the shadow of a lamp post, a glance, or a pregnant pause - illustrates a brief but rich encounter that should be read multiple times”

- Lee Lai

“There’s a space between the last thing we said, and the next thing we’re going to say… This comic, like the best short fiction, draws our attention to that place.”

- Pat Grant

Rachel Ang is a Melbourne-based comics artist. Her comics and illustrations have been published widely, including by The Lifted Brow, Going Down Swinging, The Stella Prize and Cordite Poetry Review. She is a Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow for 2018. She is the co-editor of Comic Sans, a new serialised anthology of Australian comics with a focus on real life and fresh voices. She holds a Masters Degree in Architecture from RMIT University. This is her first book.

MY BIG LIFE by Bailey Sharp

32 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 2 colour risgraph insides, 2 colour risograph cover.

My Big Life is somebody's memoir. It includes thoughts on time, relationships, stealing, instagram, books, assholes and self-mythologizing.

"Somehow when you look at Bailey’s characters you can see the way they carry their weight, their heads turn long around corners, there’s lots of bloop movement, even though the drawing is static it’s also animated. Her drawings explore how we all have strange power and consequence even through the goo of our alienation."

- Sam Wallman

Bailey Sharp is a cartoonist, animator and educator interested in all forms of visual storytelling. She grew up in Georgia but now lives and works in Australia. She is the art editor at The Lifted Brow along with her partner Ben Juers. You can follow her on instagram @nobailey

PSYCHIC HOTLINE by Leonie Brialey

160 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 1 colour risgraph insides, 3 colour risograph cover.

It's about a ghost calling a psychic hotline.

"Spare and laden with meaning, vibrating with negative space and palpable emptiness, Leonie exploits the poetic exchange between text and image. Like the art of comics itself, for me Psychic Hotline is about the (im)possibilities of communication, and how hard we all strive to listen and be heard, speaking across the corporeal divide – the spaces and absences that separate us. I love Leonie's ghost, an emptiness that feels everything."

- Penni Russon

"Leonie's comic is a warm and gentle hug from a friend you've just met but feel like you've known forever. The story and characters have a depth and magnitude made possible by Leonie's skills at writing dialogue that is natural and line work that flows across the pages."

- Nicky Minus

Leonie Brialey is a cartoonist living in Naarm (Melbourne).

SEXY FEMALE MURDERESSES by Eloise Grills

105 pages, Perfect Bound, 12.5cm x 17cm, 2 colour risgraph insides, 4 colour risograph cover.

Like a smoke alarm that plays “I Believe In Miracles” by Hot Chocolate while your house burns down.

Like a greased up stripper pole for use in emergencies, only.

They say (I say) that death is life cumming, and death by a sexy female murderess is the female climax: slippery, elusive and by the time it finally comes you’ll wish you were never born. Sexy Female Murderesses is a warning to those who would never heed it anyway, and a childlike joy for others, like floating your rubber duck down a river of blood.

Grills slices up figures of history, autobiography and speech, in a delightful springtime bloodbath for famously evil and evilly famous women—dead or alive, young and old. Burn your house down, poison your whole family, shoot your lovers point blank: just read this book before you do.

"Tens! Tens! Tens across the board for this insanely beautiful & extremely deadly masterpiece by Eloise Grills. The last year the publishing world has seen an explosion of sanctimonious, pristinely illustrated books of inspirational women throughout history, and this funny, lyrical gem with big windswept illustrations is the perfect antidote to so much good taste!

Is it poetry? Is it history? Is it memoir? Stop asking such dumbass questions and just read it already. Grills's work is formally & lyrically daring, and it has heart, soul and thighs for days. Totally, undeniably, pour a bottle of arsenic into your husbands's dinner good. I love it forever, no take backs. "

- Hera Lindsay Bird

Eloise Grills is a writer, poet and comics artist based in Footscray, heavily invested in the intersection between art, writing and having too many feelings. In 2018 she received the Felix Meyer Scholarship and won the Woollahra Digital Literary Prize for her Scum Mag column, Diary of a Post-Teenage Girl. She was a finalist for a Walkley for visual storytelling (the only queer naked punk lady to ever be shortlisted for a Walkley) and won the Lifted Brow/ RMIT non/fiction Lab Prize for Experimental Nonfiction, also in that year. She tweets and grams as @grillzoid.

Budget Overview

Funds made from this campaign will go towards recouperating the production costs of all these books (namely the $2200 we just spent on paper - All 100gsm recycled Envirocare paper stock from Ball and Doggett) and to fund the advances paid to the artists already ($300 each - $1800 all up).

For the first runs, we’re making 300 copies of each book. The artists receive 50% of all sales from 200 of them (including the 150 available of each book in this presale), and 100 contributor copies of their book to keep and sell at fairs and stuff.

Only 150 of the 200 books are available through this campaign, and the rest will be available at the launches and online after the launch dates.
