George BoeckYour intentions are laudible. In America I hear, "I don't understand it. I don't want to think about it. It doesn't exist. Gravity is only a theory. I believe that God's love is what holds us to the earth."
You probably won't sway the maniacs, but you might help tip the confused. I'll send along a bit of help.13y

Madeleine LoveAs a science graduate and mother who has spent 5 years reading into the science of GM crop/food development and GM crop/food regulation I find that in my communication with scientists on the issue of GM crops, is that they understand nothing about the quality of the regulatory processes and why the public objects on these grounds. Further, they fail to understand the near absence of any independent science investigating the human food safety of GM crops.
Australia doesn't fund anyone to do any precautionary research into GM crops, unlike NZ's INBI at the University of Cantebury and GenOK in Norway.
It's not about accepting or rejecting science... it's about wishing there was adequacy precautionary science, as opposed to product development scientists who tend to speak outside their field of expertise.
Madeleine Love
Researcher with the MADGE Australia network http://www.madge.org.au13y

Suriya VijI think a further hurdle in the challenge of communicating science is that it is often delivered as telling society what is wrong with what we are doing, but providing limited solutions. This may be because, as scientists, we want hard evidence to back up the effectiveness of any suggested solution; but if we don't try things out as a society, without stigma that getting it wrong is disastrous, how will we ever change? Aren't we taught as children that making mistakes is how we learn? Scientists need to be putting forward ideas for new ways of operating rather than just picking holes in the status quo. Make it applied science, rather than science for its own sake.13y

Rajan VenkataramanGreat project Luke, Daniel and Will

May I suggest that along with promoting the communication of science within the context of important public policy debates (climate change, GMOs etc), you also look at how communication of the EXCITEMENT of science could be improved.

To me, it is baffling that the great advances in science are not the stuff of daily discussion by EVERYONE! If there's something particularly great about being alive at this point in history, surely it is the sequencing of the genome, the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe (thanks to Australian Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt), the identification of the fundamental particles or the proof (surely not too far away) of Goldbach's conjecture.

But even supposedly educated people seem oblivious to these developments while at the same time seeming to have adequate time and curiosity to know all about reality TV programs and royal weddings. As I said: baffling!13y
Will J GrantJust a general comment (to anyone reading these comments!) sorry I can't seem to reply directly to your comment. We will certainly incorporate your ideas in our final work. Cheers for the feedback!13y

David O'HalloranYour article caught my attention and the project seems to have merit. But I did wonder about the way financial contributions were sought: "If you are feeling generous (or happen to be rich) put up a dollar or two." Why not just something like - If you're attracted to this idea we hope you might make a financial contribution. What is the need to inject generosity or richness?!

David O'Halloran13y

Bryan KavanaghGood project! Before you get too far into it might I recommend you have a look at the online Vimeo or Youtube "Real Estate 4 Ran$om". It shows that the shorttage of funds needed for science and the arts is explicable in terms of the 40% of the economy largely stolen by the rentier class who make themselves billionaires out of publicly-generated land and natural resource rents.

I believe you may find the disconnect between fairness in a tax regime that favours property speculators against heavily-taxed labour and capital goes a long way towards explaining the disconnect about which your film is inquiring.

Cheers.13y
Roy NilesIf you want to improve the ways the people of the world have found to cooperate with each other, teach them how to trust, and how to spot the trustable and distrustable. I wrote a short book on that subject, but trust me, nobody will read it if they aren't informed by a trustworthy source that it exists. Yes, it exists, but it will be your job, again if you trust me, to find it. And then to look through the inevitable chaff for the parts that you will know, instinctively and intuitively, you can most likely trust.13y
Will J GrantHi Jonathan,

Thanks for your comment - your money would go to animations, final editing, a score and a premiere.

In terms of physical payoff for supporting, after the premiere we'll be distributing the film free online, so we don't actually have any physical content to send you. We want to make our message freely available to anyone interested.

Will13y
