A Tale of Two Lowes' is about so much more than just publishing our books. It's about family, togetherness, and spreading positive messages within our stories. Both of us have experienced anxiety and depression within our lives (along with other hardships), so our goal - more than anything else - is to give our readers a safe place to escape into. And although the fantasy worlds of Helena Series and A Vixen's Curse don't align, our outlook and passion for writing certainly do.

For Sean, writing A Vixen's Curse was a great escape from the tumour growing in his foot. Somedays, the pain was unbearable, and he would distract himself by writing. With his surgery coming up in approximately 6-7 months, Sean would love to have his first story, A Vixen's Curse, published before then.

For Emma, Helena Series originally started as a fun project she worked on with her mother, Vivien Bolton, before she unexpectedly passed away in 2015. Now Emma strives to carry on her mother's legacy and the story world they created together by publishing book 3 in Helena Series, Heartless.

This crowdfunding project will allow us to publish our books, plus give you great rewards in the process!

Now...to properly introduce myself...

My name's Emma and, in all honesty, I’ve always been a storyteller. From oral storytelling as a child (whilst playing dolls) to publishing my first book on Wattpad at the young age of 19. I've written since I can remember, and I have to thank my amazingly talented parents for that. They were both creative, artistic people. Both writers. I don't know if it's genetic, but I swear that writing is something in my blood. Beyond journaling from when I was a kid, and a few snippets here and there, I first discovered my passion for writing when I was 14 and started to write my first fiction story. The story was a paranormal/horror, but simply put, it was love at first write.

What made me fall in love with the written word is how it's eternal. Throughout life, there are so many loses, so much you cannot control, but books are everlasting. And even though my stories are fiction, I've carefully woven so much reality into my work - from the pain and torment of being a confused and troubled teen; to the heartache of losing both my parents, and also the joys of finding love and compassion. In one way or other, though not usually in its actual form (I never personally was a streetwalker and my parents were thankfully much unlike Helena's), all those emotions are saturated into my work, which feels more like a sanctuary that I want to share with the world.

I started working on Helena Series when I was 17-years-young, alongside my mother, Vivien Elizabeth Bolton, who unexpectedly passed away on the 1st of April 2015. Since then, my goal has been to continue to publish Helena Series as fast as Pozible—both so I don’t forget our original plan for the series, and also because my mother always wanted to publish something and, sadly, passed away before she got the chance to. I’ve now published two books from the series and would love to have the opportunity to publish the third. Although my mum is gone, her memory can live on through my writing (her teachings) and our original drafts of this story world and characters.

Heartless is written in the urban fantasy genre but is much unlike other stories of its kind. Along with a strong female lead, Heartless is full of humour, action, and also has many positive messages along the way—including mental health awareness and mention of toxic relationships. This story breaks away from the traditional norms of its genre, creating a unique-spin on the vampire world.

Why is this story so important?

Helena Series, as a whole, teaches us many different life lessons as we follow her journey and learn along with her mistakes. Heartless, however, focalises more on mental health (particularly with men, which is an issue that isn’t discussed enough, even within modern society). According to this news article, in 2017 a shocking 75% of suicide victims were male and the worldwide statistics are even more shocking. That's why Heartless is so important. Mental illness NEEDS to be discussed, along with toxic/bad relationships and other nitty-gritty topics. This story is important because it follows the “show don’t tell” rule of writing. It’s not written in a way that is confronting. Instead, Helena Series is filled with comedy and light-hearted moments, but also happens to have some important messages along the way.

Welcome, and thanks for checking out our campaign! The main reason for doing this is to raise funds, primarily for editing costs. The tough part about self-publishing is fronting everything before you even get the chance to sell a book. The other major cost involved is marketing. The goal I’m trying to reach will significantly help get this book over that last hurdle!

My writing journey started on Wattpad, the same as Emma. It was there that I learnt how to improve my errors and develop my stories. English was the subject I struggled with most at school. I realised to hone my writing skills, I needed to teach myself the painfully complex world of grammar and punctuation. Every day I learn something new, an interesting word, or a better way to describe something, and I love putting this into my work.

A Vixen’s Curse is book 1 of my Vixen Series. Cali’s journey is an epic one that I hope everyone will love. She is one of my favourite characters to write, and certainly the hardest in terms of capturing her whirlwind of emotions. Emotions have always been difficult for me to express, so, having a character as complex as she is, keeps me on my toes. Cali's creation sparked from a favourite song of mine. Once I had her character, I needed to create a world to place her in. Rifton, the city she grew up in, emerged into a world of wonderful and interesting beings, that help shape her story. I’m sure you will love her as much as I do!

$700 for editing (Emma)

In all honesty, the book will be well over 80,000 words and editing cost will be higher than this, but what I’m going to do is edit some of Heartless myself (I'm studying my BA in creative writing, which covers editing, and have worked as a freelance editor for many years now - to make ends meet between my writing deadlines), and then once the core edit has been done by myself, I will then hire a few editors I’ve worked with in the past (along with my epic team of trusty beta readers). This will cut the editing costs significantly, since the book has already been looked over, and therefore it becomes more of a proof-reading rather than a copyedit. The full list of the editorial team will be shown upon publication, as it is likely I'll recruit students from my university, who are willing to work within my budget, but one editor I will try and hire for sure will be Robin Schroffel, since I've worked with her in the past and she's extremely talented. Ideally, I would like to hire her to copyedit the full novel, but a good editor doesn't come cheap (and so they shouldn't), and utilizing multiple forces was the best method I could think of to keep publication costs at a minimum.

For the cover image, I will be using the same talented model and photographer as the other two books, Valentina Kallias. I have been such a huge fan of her work since the beginning of time and couldn’t think of a better face to represent our Helena.

The cover design and graphics will be completed in part by two talented artists. The creator of the last two covers, Ms Anja Cota (ASC designs), and Mr Kyle Seymour (Spazem Designs).

$350 marketing (Emma)

It may seem irrelevant, but marketing is one of the most vital things in the book publishing process. Whether it’s traditional publishing, or independent publishing, without some marketing (i.e., promo/press release, etc) the book will not gain much momentum upon publication. I will be putting more of my own savings into the marketing process, but $350 is a good starting platform for a campaign, including some targeted ads on YouTube/Facebook/Instagram to help get the book noticed upon its initial release.

$600 Editing (Sean)

As mentioned above, Emma works in editing, which is great news for this project because she’s willing to do a full developmental edit of the novel for cheap. Usually (especially for her level of experience in editing), editors would cost a lot more (they often charge by the word). This amount allows her to schedule some time in her working day (as a professional editor) and edit A Vixen’s Curse in a timely manner. Emma will also be covering formatting (for both eBook and paperback while editing), and another second editor will be hired for line editing, likely Robin Schroffel (listed above). On top of that, my beta reader team is all set up and ready to go!

$350 Marketing (Sean)

Marketing really is the key to any creative piece of work, but it’s even more crucial for us indie authors (especially those who are just starting out, and entirely new to the publishing world). I’ve calculated that this amount will be a great foothold in getting my writing career started. Similar to Emma, I will be using ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube to help promote the release of A Vixen’s Curse.

For my book cover, I’m going with Oliviaprodesign's. I really like her designing style, she’s reasonably priced, and a talented cover-artist. This will include promo/graphics that are made.

I currently have a makeshift website, but it’s limited and temporary. I’m hoping to create an author website with Wix, which will cost almost $350 for everything, but even $200 would be a huge help toward my website. As an indie author, it’s vital to have a platform where I’ll be able to sell my books and keep my readers updated with my upcoming novels.

Note: of course, it's important to mention there are transaction fees and Pozible charge 5% to host a project, so all of this will be taken from our pot, meaning that even if/when we meet the target we will not get the full amount and will be putting some in ourselves, too.

We're only putting April 2020 as the absolute deadline because that's most likely when Heartless will be available to the general public. These dates listed here in the rewards are all stretched out to the absolute maximum. If we meet this AMAZING goal, we will both release another EXCLUSIVE short story - that's FOUR free short stories in total, along with our published books which everyone who donated (regardless of how much) will receive in eBook form as a bonus thank you! We will also have an hour-long live hang out on Youtube (separately because we live far away from each other) after the project is done as celebration!

If we meet this INCREDIBLE goal, we will do all of the above PLUS volunteer our time at local organisations. For Emma, it will be an animal shelter, which will be filmed (as much as Pozible – depending on what they allow) and shared onto Youtube. Emma will also finally take the time to stop procrastinating and clean out her spare room (her mum’s old bedroom) and turn it into a cat sanctuary and foster home. This will also be filmed, as will the future cats she fosters for (which will be a lot more with the extra space). Simply put, this reward will help us donate the most precious thing of all – time and help us save some furry friends along the way!

Note: Depending on Sean’s surgery and healing times, his volunteer period may be slightly delayed, but Emma will volunteer twice as much in the meantime on his behalf until he’s able to. Thank you!

If we meet this OUTSTANDING goal, we will both be able to comfortably publish not just Heartless and A Vixen's Curse, but also their sequels! That's right! Four books will be published, AND we’ll throw in another bonus short story which will only ever be shared with you amazing peeps! But that’s not all. On top of that, we will organise a ‘clean up’ in a heavily littered place at a location somewhere near us, where we will take the time to Clean Up Australia. This will include some video footage and a before and after photo. Let’s not just write books, but also help save wild animals and our planet!

Note: Like above, depending on Sean’s surgery this one may be delayed for him, but we promise it will happen!
