Susan DirghamFor the first issue of 'Beloved Syria', Norma and I drew on what money we had between us to cover the costs of the graphic design work and printing. In the scheme of things, it was a small sacrifice to make. Not really a sacrifice since we couldn't imagine a better way to spend our money. And we have been very proud of the magazine. 'Beloved Syria' serves as a record of the Syria that is cherished by so many, and it can be a bridge of understanding between the people of Australia and Syria. We understand that Beloved Syria cannot pledge to its own campaign. So I will take the plunge. I'm very proud to commit to it again and give support to Norma (a former student), the other Syrian editors, the graphic designer (another former student of mine) and my colleagues at AMES who have put many hours into preparing this second edition. There is good reason to believe in this exciting venture - the magazine is being put together with love, patience and faith. Ingredients that can bring people together. Working on the magazine has been a steep learning curve for me. I'm an anti-war activist, and yet the magazine has taken me to unfamiliar places. Love stretches us. It is not always in places you would expect. You find it around corners and in dark places sometimes. I hope you find it in this magazine. Susan Dirgham9y
Beloved SyriaThank you to all those people – friends, family, and strangers - who have donated to our crowd funding campaign. We are extremely grateful for your support and encouragement. Perhaps our target of $10,000 was wishful thinking, a little unrealistic since we entered the crowd funding campaign with few firm promises of support from people outside our small circles. We have learnt that believing in a project isn’t enough when it comes to crowd funding. Nevertheless, we maintain a belief in 'Beloved Syria'. We will meet the $10,000 target by pledging with the magazine’s Visa card. So please don't stop giving us support now that we have come to the end of this campaign. (If you would like to contribute directly to the magazine, please see details below.) In regard to producing the 2nd issue of 'Beloved Syria', the most important part of that work is done. We have received contributions from Syrians, both in Syria and outside the country. And non-Syrians have contributed reviews of music and books. There will be beautiful photographs in this issue. For example, we are very proud of the image on our cover page. It shows accomplished oud player Fadi Haddad, a Syrian who arrived in Australia just 2 years ago with his family. The image was taken by portrait photographer Jacqueline Mitelman. Although men certainly have a presence in the magazine, it is women that are drawing it together. We determinedly focus on what nurtures and unites us: life forces that are evident in the loving human heart, the land, food, and the arts, including, sculpture, music, poetry, photography, and embroidery. We are united by our individual faiths that give us hope and encourage us to work toward unity and peace. We all have experience of migrant classrooms in Australia, where people from diverse backgrounds can work together and bond. We know from experience and observation that it is possible to build friendships with strangers, even with those that others might tell you are your enemies. Australia and Syria do have significant historic links. We hope this magazine can update and extend those links in loving and sophisticated ways. Beloved Syria’ can go beyond borders to tell a human story that unites us all. Susan DirghamWe are very grateful for all the wonderful support Beloved Syria has received up to this point - the positive comments and encouragement. Thank you! We're particularly touched by Nicholas's help in getting us up to the half way mark. (Thank you Nicholas!) We are on the home run now. :) Please tell friends and family about our campaign to raise money for the second issue. There is so much to learn about Syria. And by discovering Syria, we may discover more about ourselves. We are focusing on the best in humanity. We may have an impact, even. We hope so.9y
