Mark Moldre: Solo Album Number 3
*** Please note Vinyl Test Pressings in the Rewards do not come with Cover Art - I will personally write the credits and song titles on the paper sleeve and centre label*****
MY POZIBLE GOAL
To manufacture and release my 3rd solo album on vinyl, CD and digital platforms and to be able to support the release with the help of a publicist and video promotion. This is the first time I'm releasing an album on my own without the help of a label or distribution company. This will also be my first ever vinyl release. As a completely self managed, self funded, independent artist I'm super excited at the prospect.
I'm really happy to say that the recording, mixing and mastering of my new album is complete.
So this is where I turn to you, dear listener, in the hope that I can get this over the finish line with your assistance. It'll be kinda like you're my record company...only this'll be more fun. You get to pick your rewards and receive that wonderful feeling in your gut for supporting local, independent music.
ABOUT THE PROJECT (MAKING MUSIC WITH OLD FRIENDS)
"Making music together is the best way for two people to become friends"
- Hermann Hesse
I have released a whole swag of albums and EP's in the past - about 10 in total with various projects. Over the years I've played loads of shows - opening for the likes of The Church, Tex Perkins, The Backsliders, Mark Seymour (Hunters and Collectors) and members of Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel. I've played festivals the likes of Dashville, The National Folk Festival and The Binic Folks Blues Festival (France).
A huge part of the reason that I continue to make music is that I love the creative dynamic that exists in working with a group of my oldest life-long friends. I enjoyed making my last album (An Ear To The Earth) so much that I decided to pull together the same team to try and remake/rekindle some of the musical magic and mayhem that we captured last time.
I've known producer Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss/Infinity Broke) along with his brother, drummer, Scott - since about the age of 5. We've been making music together in one way or another since we were 8 years old - starting by miming along to Beatle records and charging our parents and ther friends an entry fee to watch us play under cellophane covered light bulbs with tennis rackets for guitars and vacuum cleaners for microphones.
As the years rolled by my first involvement in a band that actually wrote their own songs was with The Fallen Scarecrows - the line up?......you guessed it.....the very same trio. Even after The Fallen Scarecrows folded we continued to play at each others weddings, parties, at music venues and on various recording projects for decades.
As for the rest of the team of comrades - Reuben Wills (Bassist) married Scott and Jamie's sister Sophie years back and became one of my closest friends. Adam Lang (Slide and Banjo player) - I've been mates with him for about 18 years and we've played more shows together than I can count. Chris Colquhoun (Engineer) worked with us on An Ear The Earth and in the 7 years or so that I've known Chris - well, I couldn't imagine another person that would work harder or bend over backwards any further to get a recording project over the finish line.
It's a total privilege and a pleasure making music with this bunch.
We recorded the new album at Reuben's Mum's place in French's Forest (could it get any homlier than this?) we upended tables in her dining room and matresses in the bedrooms, pushed lounges up against walls, snaked masses of cable through the rooms and generally created havoc in her home for 2 weekends. The new album was recorded live to 1" tape - here's where the years of making music together really comes into it's own - we all have to get our performances right altogether - no overdubs. This is a rockier record than my last - it's eclectic and crosses mutiple genres whilst the sound of a bunch of friends having a grand old time pulls it together into a cohesive musical racket.
2018 also saw us undertake a tour of France together - culminating in some exciting shows at The Binic Folks Blues Festival.
Backstage In France
Onstage In France
Onstage In France ( ....and a new song from the upcoming album)
Finally, special mention goes to Jadey O'Regan and Tim Byron for taking time out of their busy schedules to play piano and hammond organ. It's also an absolute honour to have had another member of the musical family, Scott and Jamie's Dad, Lee, come in and play tenor sax on one track - Lee has played with the who's who of jazz - even Sinatra!
We were also lucky enough to have very special album artwork created by French-Canadian artist Lenny Piroth-Robert. He's a incredibly talented artist and he's providing 4 paintings that are going to look beautiful in vinyl sized format. I'll be making sure that new videos, songs or artwork will make their debut right here on this page so that you can follow the album creation with us.
With your help I can continue to cement and celebrate my long term musical friendships with this milestone release. And I'd love to have you play a part in that.
Lots of Love
Mark

SYDNEY MORNING HERALD: CD OF THE WEEK “Imagine a less garrulous and noisy Tom Waits (for example the New orleans brass and clarinet in Everything I Need Is Here) a late-night Ryan Adams (the droopy eyed Dreamtime Blues) and a kind of Sydney Willie Nelson (I Don’t Know What’s Become Of Her) and you’ll have a sense of the relaxed but never actually soft atmosphere here.” Bernard Zuel
STACK MAGAZINE: “Opening with a rumbling tuba, Mark Moldre’s second album has you thinking he could be an Aussie version of Tom Waits. But he’s a sweeter singer. An Ear To The Earth is filled with delightful detours, switching from blues to roots to jazz. Very tasty indeed.” ★ ★ ★ ★ Jeff Jenkins
POST TO WIRE: “An Ear To The Earth is exactly what you want from an artist – a record that shows they’re stretching themselves, expanding their art and reverentially experimenting with the great art of songwriting.” 8/10 Chris Familton
MESS AND NOISE: “Quixotic and genre defying”
NO DEPRESSION: “Mark Moldre has slowly but surely carved out a wonderful body of work…Moldre has now gone one step further and both refined and expanded his stylistic palette on his new 2013 album An Ear To The Earth, exploring his interests in jazz, blues and folk with a unique and honest take on those most traditional of musical forms”
ALT MEDIA: “Moldre, a gifted lyricist and melody-maker, manages to piece together different styles, both coherently and beautifully.” ★ ★ ★ ★ Katie Davern
DRUM MEDIA: “Stepping way out of his comfort zone, singer-songwriter Mark Moldre delivers an album Nick Cave would be proud of” Michael Smith
INPRESS: “An Ear To The Earth is one of 2013’s tastiest trips, taking the listener on a rollicking, rootsy journey. One minute, it rumbles; the next, it’s gentle and poignant.”
TIME OFF: “His 2010 solo debut The Waiting Room earned serious plaudits, and after a lengthy gestation period his new follow-up, An Ear To The Earth, has already proved a more-than-worthy successor.” Steve Bell
americanaUK “his songs are peppered with junkyard percussion while he inhabits the demimonde that Waits stalks so well…..recalls another antipodean , CW Stoneking with its mixture of exuberance and old time charm.” Paul Kerr
X-PRESS MAGAZINE: “ An Ear To The Earth is a loose yet stylish romp through the lives of the lonesome as Moldre comes across as a younger and less wearied Tom Waits (with an Australian accent).” Chris Havercroft
TIMBER AND STEEL “”If Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy were pushed out to sea in a rickety old boat they’d come up with something like this.” Jessica Cassar
EAR TO THE GROUND (US) “Not since I first heard Pokey Lafarge have I been so impressed with an artist’s ability to capture a bygone era.”
MOS EISLEY MUSIC (GERMANY): “Easily among the best releases of its kind….one of the best folk releases this year”
ROOTS HIGHWAY (ITALY) “a folk singer who knows how to translate his music dark places” Fabio Cerbone
