UPDATE: we reached our goal - let's get to $15,000!

Thanks to the incredible support of our community we reached our target early! Too deadly! If we can hit $15,000 we can do so much more public awareness work about the dangers of shale gas fracking both in the NT and nationally - chip in now or share this campaign with your friends. Together we can ban fracking and protect country for good.

Help young mob protect country from fracking!

Right across the Northern Territory young mob are rising up to fight for their rights to protect their land, water and culture from dangerous gas fracking and impacts of global warming.

Shale Gas Fracking has already been banned in many states across Australia and countries around the world because of the risks it poses to water, the health impacts on surrounding communities and more recently leaks in the fracked wells have seen whole communities evacuated.

Your support means that young Aboriginal people right across the Northern Territory will have the skills, resources and support needed to build capacity in their communities; to get informed and protect country from dangerous shale gas fracking!

As the oceans and temperatures rise and the destruction of our sacred country continues, it’s time for people to rise up to the challenge that the causes and impacts of climate change presents. Seed mob are doing exactly that and we need your support!

Seed's story

Seed is Australia's first Indigenous Youth Climate Network. We are building a movement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to protect our country, our culture and our communities from the causes and impacts of climate change. We do this by running campaigns to protect country from climate change and fossil fuel extraction while also building the capacity of our young people to be a part of creating positive change by providing skills based training and platforms to take action. After launching in 2014, we have grown to be a national grassroots network led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, with a small team of staff, volunteer state coordinators and over 100 volunteers from every state and territory. Seed is a branch of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at the forefront of the causes and impacts of climate change and as young people, we make up the majority of the Indigenous population in Australia, therefore it’s our generation with the most at stake who need to be at the forefront of change; leading solutions that build strong, resilient and sustainable communities.

Protecting country from fracking in the NT

This year we've been working with communities in the Northern Territory who are standing up for their rights to protect their land, water and ways of life. Right now, over 80% of the Northern Territory is covered in oil and gas exploration licences, with proposals to frack the Northern Territory and build a pipeline that would cut right through country from Tennant Creek to Mount Isa in Queensland.

The Northern Territory is already seeing and will continue to experience the worst impacts of a changing climate. On top of the potential impacts caused by shale gas fracking, climate change is a huge threat to the long-term viability of communities and people’s ability to live on country. Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal station owners, pastoralists and the broader public from all across the Territory are standing together and they demand a ban on fracked shale gas. It’s time we stand with them!

From Borroloola to Alice Springs to Darwin and beyond, young people right across the Northern Territory are rising up and taking on the responsibility to protect country and culture. With your support we can grow a strong network of young people across the Territory with the skills, support networks and tools to build capacity in their communities; to get informed, get connected and protect country.

We know that to keep our climate below 2 degrees of warming, we need to leave all new coal and gas reserves in the ground. It would be reckless to not learn from the mistakes already made in other places where fracking has been tried and subsequently banned because of the irreversible impacts on people and country.

How The Funds Will Be Used

We've got some big plans but we need your support! A donation now will help us:

  • bring together young people from across the Northern Territory for skills-based training; information and knowledge sharing and building plans to protect land, water and culture from shale gas fracking
  • support this network of young people across the Territory by hosting meetings, ensuring phone and internet expenses, supporting travel costs and connecting them up to our national grassroots network of volunteers right across the country
  • support and amplify the voices of young people and communities opposing shale gas fracking on their country through campaign resources and support including support for community meetings; campaign materials like posters, flyers and fact sheets; recording action through video and photos, stalls at events and holding creative actions to lobby decision makers to protect country

If successful in this crowdfunder, we expect this support to cover costs for this work over the next 6 months, however any additional funding will enable us to explore further options for supporting communities and expanding our work.

The Challenges

Every dollar will make a huge difference and we're so grateful for everyone who is able to chip in no matter how big or small! But in order to ensure we have the financial sustainability to grow Seed and our grassroots network of young people across the Northern Territory and right around the country, we've been growing and diversifying our grassroots funding base and this crowdfunding campaign is a huge part of that! Seed is a branch of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) charity. ***All donations over $2 are tax deductible - so make sure you select this option, or the $25 reward, if you would like a tax deductible receipt!*** For more information regarding donations, please feel free to get in touch with our friendly National Co-Director, Amelia Telford, by emailing [email protected]

Seed is led by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people fighting for climate justice, it's so important and exciting to know that we can be funded by people who share our values and vision for change in the world. This gives us even more agency to fight for the protection of our land, culture and communities from the causes and impacts of climate change.

It’s a big fight and we need everyone including you. Your donations will go a long way, as will your support for campaigns to protect country - you can stand with mob in the NT who are fighting to %23ProtectCountry against fracking by signing our open letter: seedmob.org.au/openletter
