Spiral - Sci-fi Short Film
‘Spiral’ is an ambitious short sci-fi film being produced by students at the Western Australian Screen Academy (WASA) in collaboration with the talented third-year actors at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).
Spiral is one woman's effort to save a young Cosmonaut marooned by World War 3.
September 30, 1983 – the Nuclear holocaust is a reality and only remnants of civilization remain. In a city isolated, Katrina is tasked with making radio contact with any potential surviving nations. Inadvertently picking up the distress call of Dmitry – a Russian cosmonaut marooned in orbit after the doomsday – Katrina faces the difficult task of guiding this man home to Earth and must decide the lengths she will go to in order to save a life.
Our completed film will premiere at the red carpet Gala Screening of the WA Screen Academy films at Luna Cinema and be broadcast on Channel 9 into the WA Screen Academy Awards.
We will be entering 'Spiral' into film festivals around the world; such as the NASA ‘CineSpace’ Short Film and Russian Resurrection Film Festival.

Crew
Steven Kerr | Director
Before studying his Master’s in directing at WASA, he'd been an actor, drama and media teacher in Hong Kong and screen acting coach. “Spiral” was first conceived to examine in times crisis, the ability of some to connect with others in common humanity. Having been a Cold War kid, he's seeing history repeat itself. Hopefully, saner heads prevail than the 1980’s and humankind's fate is not determined by Twitter. The human race must take its place in the stars if it is to survive.
William Pacquiao | Producer
William is a graduate of Television Broadcast at North Metropolitan TAFE, He has chosen to be a producer to pursue his love for documentaries & storytelling. He loves making inspiring, positive content and working with passionate people.
He plans to work on productions in television and film while creating his own content.
Jillian Tunbridge | Associate Producer
The fact that Jillian Tunbridge was born in Perth in 1981 is irrelevant because she spends all her time in imaginary worlds and can never remember how old she is. She had a children's book published under the totally unrecognisable pseudonym, 'J.L.Tunbridge', but likes screenwriting better so she's getting her masters degree in that instead.
She's also studying producing as a second stream, low key in love with everything space, and so excited to be able to be involved in Spiral. She stands firm in her belief that Australia needs to make more Scifi.
Corey Booth | Writer
Spiral, for me, presented an opportunity to deliver an antithetical work to the omnipresent anti-Russian propaganda being fed through the mass media, populous Hollywood films (Marvel’s archetypal villains) and even Oscar-winning documentaries (Icarus). Rather than be blindly lead down the path of politically driven mass hysteria, I believe it is important to learn that both power abusers and decent people exist in all societies. Also, I like space.
Brendan Joel | Director of Photography
Brendan Joel is an experienced cinematographer with a passion for visual storytelling. He is currently completing his Masters at the WA Screen Academy. His portfolio includes a range of film projects, music videos, commercial and corporate works and an audio/visual stage show. A huge fan of sci-fi concepts and films he looks forward to being involved in this exciting project.
Kat Goddard | Editor
Kat is studying her Masters in Screen, specialising in editing and cinematography. Her passion started with an advanced diploma in video production at FTI in 2004 and has worked on many projects, live performance and events. Kat has just finished Directing her first feature film 'Black Ghost' and enjoys working with local creators to help bring their visions to life. Having a passion for space and sci-fi, Kat hopes to take 'Spiral' to a new level in filmmaking with the fantastic team on board for this ambitious project.
Joanne Carwardine | Sound Mixer | Post Production
Joanne Marie Carwardine has studied at Tafe and ECU, with 2018 being her last year as a Master of screen studies degree. Majoring in sound with a background of broadcast, film, and videography, Joanne wishes to expand her skills and create something impactful with Spiral and enjoy the journey there.

We will be working with a production designer to construct and design a cockpit based on the Spiral and then build it in the studio. - $500 – Set design/ props
All our sets, locations and costumes will be set in the 80's. We will be putting a lot of effort to get that look for the film. - $300 – Camera equipment
We require a stedicam & stedicam operator to help bring the vision of 'Spiral' to life. - $1000 – 3D model Spiral/ VFX supervisor
To make the film look fantastic we need good visual effects and supervisor that will make it look amazing! - $200 - Festivals entry/ contingency fund
We have big plans to enter the film into the NASA 'CineSpace' to show off our work and festivals around the world. - $200 - Locations
We will be shooting at different locations around Perth and will have costs associated such as parking, transport, fees etc.
Any donations you give will be invaluable in getting this project off the ground.
Potential Challenges
Our biggest challenge in filming 'Spiral' is making it look genuine as it's a science fiction film set in the 80's also in a space shuttle we will overcome this by:
- building our own spaceship cockpit in the studio.
- Securing high-quality filming locations eg. aviation Museum, 80's era architecture.
- Hiring a professional set/ prop/ costume designer & gaffer.
- Securing a 3D model of the Spiral and use a Post-Production FX Supervisor.
We really appreciate your support and would love to make this film the best we can.
