The Story

“The End, The Beginning” tracks the relationship between a teenage girl (Skye) and her father (Finn). Based in the postcard town of Collector this absurd, comical romp follows Skye as she and the townspeople come to grips with the knowledge that the world is ending due to climate change. Our film playfully examines what it means to be a young person searching for purpose. Skye initially views her father as a villain however our film concludes when she finally sees her fathers vulnerability and ultimately his humanity.

Our Vision

Our project was born out of a nostalgia that the all the creators had for a time when every small event felt monumental. Therefore this film is for those of us who drag their childhoods kicking and screaming into adulthood.

We want to make you laugh!

However in this film we are not looking to lean on Australian stereotypes for comedic effect. Instead we are attempting to construct a an absurd comedy set in rural Australia, all seen through the eyes of a teenage girl. This coupled with the premise that the world is coming to its end, form the foundations for a unique Australian comedy.

Our film is also a coming of age story and therefore deals with what it means to be a young person in contemporary Australia. Is family still important? How can you develop an identity? What is your purpose? Is any of this important if the world ends tomorrow?

We believe that humour and these types of stories are important as they often develop a new kind of discourse around humour, adolescence and the Australian identity in the 21st Century.

A little bit about us!

We conceived this film while studying at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney and we are creating it as our major work in the Masters Program.

We were brought together by our love of comedy, music, visually loaded films and working with filmmakers who struggle to compromise on the clarity of their vision. Our experience ranges from short film to video art to music videos to advertisements to orchestra conducting to supervising a music camp once a year in Perth. 

The End, The Beginning will be our second collaboration and we hope that, as always, this film will interrogate the incongruities in life by dragging our audience along on this absurd, vibrant and irreverent journey.

Screening in November in Sydney, Canberra, Collector and Melbourne

The biggest costs for this film are Production Design, Music Recording, and accomodation, catering and transport to the shooting sites. Those are the main areas that your donation will be contributing to, and they represent the most important parts of the film to all of us.

The Projected Budget for this project is $66,000. With help from our school we already raised $26,000, but we need your help for that last $40,000. Obviously this is a huge amount of money and we understand the large task we have set for ourselves to raise this sum. However, what we have is a story which is overflowing with joy and a team deeply invested in the project. The money donated will go towards bringing this story to life!

When we first went about recruiting friends and creatives we admired, they were excited by the idea and primarily attracted to shooting a visually and musically led story in a small country town. We’re hoping that we can appeal to similarly-minded people when asking for donations. It’s a strange and ambitious project, but if it sounds like the kind of film you’d be excited to watch, we desperately need and would greatly value anything you can contribute!
