'Short & Sweet' Canberra VANITY INSANITY 2013
directed by Catherine Crowley

In 2013 I explored ways to disguise a puppeteer without hiding, myself a character simultaneously (ventriloquism but as a play). I wrote a one-woman short play called VANITY INSANITY for Canberra’s ‘Short & Sweet’ Festival. It won BEST ACTRESS, Catherine Crowley won BEST DIRECTOR and Runner-up BEST PRODUCTION. This work explored the relationship between a puppet, a puppeteer and an actor who were actually all the same person (me) and in conversation with eachother and therefore themes of SELF emerged.

Last year I worked with Heidi Silberman with an aim to give more heart to the work (and lengthen it) to make the script  rehearsal-ready. We presented it to a friendly audience in association with the Street Theatre, thanks to the support from the amazing Caroline Stacey. After some excellent audience feedback I reworked the script again and applied to the Street Theatre’s HIVE resident writer’s program with success! This year I am deepening the work and broadening my audience with  dramaturg Peter Matheson.

This year I am participant in the Street Theatre’s EXPAND mentor program, from which video projection artist and guru Mic Gruchy is now collaborating with me on this development as 'integrated media designer'. From here I am submitting for the Playwrights Australia LAB development grant as well as for the Australian Council Development Grant. With any luck if I make my target here on Pozible it may all come about! (did you know funding and financing bodies look favourably on artists who have raised their own funds through networks like POZIBLE!)

But why a development? There are technical, physical and theatrical challenges in the work, as it explores relationships between puppetry, physical theatre, acting, animation and video projection (so it's not just learning lines or reading from a script!) We will be asking what can we physically do, how can we do it and how will it help to inform the writing. My wonderful creative team & I will have the opportunity to try these ideas 'on the floor' during a development, all thanks to your support!

Hopefully after at least one development I can work towards a theatre season, so this is your chance to be a part of it all NOW in these early stages (please).

Partnership and Collaboration

I am excited to have on board as Supporting Partner one of Australia’s leading theatre companies for young people Canberra Youth Theatre (CYT). For the development CYT will be provide their theatre venue ‘C Block’, some lights and their wonderful Theatre Technician and Production Manager Johnboy Davidson. Johnboy will collaborate with Mic Gruchy as well as mentor senior CYT tech students in roles in stage management, lighting and sound. CYT’s Artistic Director will facilitate Emerging Artists as dramaturgs, and along with director Catherine Roach I will collaborate with Ensemble performers as trainee puppeteers. It’s going to be incredible to engage with Australia’s next theatre-makers!

How The Funds Will Be Used

The money you pledge will be for hiring particular lighting and technical projection equipment so that we may try scripted ideas and explore specific theatrical transitions in the development week.

Also I will be able to pay my animator for his animated drafts, which are being tirelessly prepared as we speak. I will be paying him a smidgen for the time he is putting in (for those who know animation it takes lots of time!)

So here's the breakdown:
Portable LED Projector (4000 Lumens for theatre space) Hire for 6 days Canberra Spit and Party Hire = $362.98
Pre-drafting Animators  fee = $600.
Return trip for artist Sydney-Canberra Murrays coaches = $42.
1 Week's artist's accommodation Canberra Executive Apartments via booking.com 6 nights = $720
Materials for props and puppet fabrication = $150
Paint for white wall for projection (including painting wall in theatre black again afterwards) =$125
Total = $1,999.98 ($2000)

If we go over target (yippee!) that extra money will go to a FILM DOCUMENTOR to capture the development for further fundraising ventures (watch this space!)

The Challenges

Training Aerial class (Susnna Defraia workshop)
Chi Chu Photography 2014

For IN MY HEAD I think one of the main obstacles is clarifying story. This visual theatre piece is highly metaphorical. It is about a woman’s struggle from oppressive forces to freedom - a need for self-control. It is my challenge to find truth in this and avoid vagueness or cliché. Visual theatre should be ambiguous enough to speak to us as if it is OUR OWN story not just someone else’s. So it is ready for a development now and craves audience feedback (Hey that's you!)

I think other challenges might include the real possibility that funding and finances might not come together at first, but persistence is the key. Every dollar you pledge now can help this piece get developed as I believe a good play will 'out' no matter what. It’s so important independent artists produce local work that allow mentorships (I can't do it all on my own!) and collaborations with local and interstate artists to build high quality, finished tourable work. We owe it to our audiences and for the reputation of artists everywhere.

As it is largely a visual and non-verbal piece IN MY HEAD speaks a universal language I'm hoping one IN MY HEAD will tour outside Australia.

But for now...don't leave me hanging....
