Tom Hogan

Hi. My name is Tom Hogan. I'm a composer and sound artist. I write and produce a lot of funny songs and try to make "wonderful" pieces... whatever that means.


With that money I've covered the costs to get there, and almost enough to live! SO GOOD.

Any money I receive from now on will be put towards producing the works I develop in Finland. I'll still be completing the song and poem requests, of course! These are the things I'm now considering developing and producing as part of the residency:

• A public installation
• A website to present one of the new works
• An album release of new compositions
• A published collection of new works and corresponding poems
  

And all contributors will be thanked in the final works!

And if I get to $1200, I'll compile an audio release of some of the works I create in Finland - all contributors will receive it for free. (Suggestion: "The Finnished Product"?)

For $15, I'll write you a haiku, a personalised poem with a wordcount in multiples of 17. I will design and print it, and send it to you, complete with the Scott Sandwich "Stain of Authenticity". (The stain will not be anything gross - it's more like a classic seal, just to prove it's a genuine original item!)

For $45, I will write, memorise and record you a long poem (Scott Sandwich-style!), on a topic of your choice, produce it with a musical bedding, and send it directly to you as a high quality mp3.

Here are a couple of old favourites in this style: For Elyce (Greenaway) and going back to where Scott Sandwich started, A Beat Poet Falls In Love (major language warning).

For $60, I will write and produce you a wacky Tom Hogan song or instrumental piece, in the genre of your choice (Note: it doesn't have to be wacky), with lyrics on a topic of your choice. I'll send it directly to you as a high quality mp3. Choose your favourite genre, or band, or just try and challenge me, I'm up for it!

Perhaps you want a musical about matadors, an obscene country song, or a classic rap about horses?

For $100, I'll write and produce you a complete quirky Tom Hogan CD single, a song or instrumental piece in the genre of your choice (it doesn't have to be quirky), including original cover art, a bonus B-Side music track, and post you the printed CD,and send it to you as an mp3.Check out my Obscure Music History website for some examples, where your song will also be posted, and your name will feature as a character in the completely fabricated biography - immortalised through song. You'll also receive a printed haiku,complete with the Scott Sandwich "Stain of Authenticity".

And for the hardcore supporters, for $800 the guitar I use for Finland will be yours. During the process, I will add some artistic "alterations" to the guitar, and ship it back to Australia after my Finland residency. I'll get it to you, and then you'll have a completely unique signature musical instrument!

I'm going to Finland. What I don't have is anything to do when I get there. I need to purchase a guitar when I get there, because I can't afford to ship one over and carry it through the snow and destroy it in the plane's cargo hold (This has happened twice), alongside everything else I need to take with me or purchase there. I need a guitar, because I am a guitarist and my residency involves making music. In fact, there are a few pieces of equipment I need to make my residency complete - guitar leads, amp hire, writing tools, a hard drive, insurance, extra luggage costs - and once I have all that sorted, then I'll start thinking about food.

So.

I'm asking for money because I need it and I don't have enough money to do what I want to do there. But really, I'm asking for your business. Because rather than a tax deductible receipt in return, I thought it might be nice if I gave you something. Welcome to Pozible! You pledge me your money and after I get back in February, I create the things that you paid for!

Have a look at some of the things on offer, and help make my music residency musical! Otherwise it will be unmusical, cold, and pathetic. I'm offering to write and record "wacky" Tom Hogan songs, or a CD, or personalised poems - and a guitar! I will work my hardest to make the products radical, and exceed your expectations. And they'll probably be funny, because that's what I try to do. That's my art, man.
