The Robots Are Coming have been running 3D printing workshops in schools and for the public, in and around Melbourne for the last 18 months or so.  One of the most popular aspects of our workshops has been the 3D body scanning that we do.  When we started out we were scanning in monochrome, but we were able to move to full colour scanning some time ago.  



Most of the printed figurines that we have done have been done in monochrome, even where we have captured the scan in colour.

We can now offer full colour CMYK 3D printed figurines.

 



The printers used to make these full colour prints are still crazy expensive, so the prints don't come particularly cheap either.  We hope to have our very own some day, but for the moment we do them under contract.  Once we hit 20 figurines at a time, the price comes down to the point where we can provide them for $145.  There is quite a bit of work also in taking the scan and processing the data into the format that the printer can make sense of.  We'll take care of all that :)

The funds will be used to pay for 
* the 3D printing
* the scanning
* data processing
* packaging
* postage and
* the costs associated with running the 2 hour workshop.

Oh yeah, we'll also put the scans up online so that they can be shared around the social networks, embedded into websites and that sort of thing.

We've used our main contractor before and we've shipped dozens of monochrome figurines that we have printed to people who have attended one of our more than 40 workshops, so we are pretty comfortable about the success of the project.  It's really mostly about hitting the target of 20 prints.

I guess the one thing that could upset things is if we had a hard drive failure between taking the scans and getting the prints done or the data backed up to our NAS.  We'll be sure to run regular back-ups!
